WOW! My old man doesn't have no cent nickels in his book that are in that good a condition. That's in really good shape, you can even read the liberty on the headband. You'd pay about $20 for a coin like that out of a display. Congrats.

Thanks! And after looking at the coin some more, do you think that's lamination in the top right above the hair? Or perhaps just some pmd?

    Well, it's been fun!
I've picked up my last 6 box of halves and as expected they were all skunks.
Funny thing happened as I carted out the boxes (The bank lets me borrow their cart). I hit the curb with the cart and down went the boxes! COINS EVERYWHERE!! I've NEVER dropped a box and on my very last pickup I drop six of them!!!
Fortunately, the security guard stood by as I gathered up all the coins, with the help of some passerbys and surprisingly didn't miss a one after re-rolling them all.

Anyway, I'd like to wish everyone much success. With the exception of a solid 40% box, I've acheived all my goals!
So after searching $380,000 in halves, over the last 13 months, I've obtained 844-40%, and 314-90%. That combined with what I've collected previously is a nice little nest egg. I'll have to figure out what to do with all the proofs and foreign coins I've got.

    Good Luck!
    Signing out.

Today is a sad day. I received an e-mail today from my Pickup Bank (actually a credit union). Here is what it said:

"Unfortunately, after this week, we will no longer be able to order coins for you. It was decided by senior management that it was a business service and that we would not be able to provide it any more. This week’s order has been placed, and we will have what you requested, but it will be the last time we are able. I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you, and if you have any questions please let me know."

Is there anything that I can do? This isn't just a normal pickup bank but my family and I hold a checking account, savings account, several CDs and our car loan and mortgage. I actually bank at this bank. Should I just accept this or can I inquire to the "senior management" regarding their decision.

I have replied to the e-mail asking if I can limit my orders and/or pay a fee per box of coins. Not sure what else I can do.

I'm not really an expert. I've seen coins with die cracks that look like that. That little ridge of metal looks like there was some metal flow into an imperfection in the die. Couldn't say for sure without looking at it in the flesh. My old man has a dollar coin from the NO mint after it was taken from the union in the civil war. They drove the presses until the dies were in pieces. It has cracks all over it that look like that.

You could try to work something out with them. The way I work personally is to have several banks (saving accounts work best) that I order from and several with machines that I dump at. I even pay for boxes at a couple of the ones with the machines just to keep good relations. If I have a problem with any one of them, I just close them out and go find another one. If you're in an area with limited banks, that may not be feasible, though.

Yes, this bank that sent me the e-mail is a "pick-up only". I have NEVER dumped my coins at their bank...I have 2 others in town that are primarily a dump bank.

It sucks that the bank you do the most business with is cutting you off. Were I in your shoes, I'd try to open at least one more savings account at a bank that is amicable to ordering boxes for you. I have learned to look for banks in the middle of a lot of cash businesses (especially fast food restaurants). I tell them right up front that I'm a coin collector and why I'm interested in having an account with them. I'm usually able to talk to the vault manager. If they already do a lot of coin, they probably don't mind ordering an extra box or two every other week or so. I typically open an account with a little more than the minimum to avoid any fees.

I know it takes time and energy, locks up your capital in a bank account, and might make you go out of your way, but that's the best $0.02 I can offer, after taxes and adjusted for inflation, of course. :)
