I'm on a buying hiatus, except for maybe small, inexpensive pieces that capture my interest. I've realized that I now have a drawer-full of coins that I know very little about, and I'm doing more reading than anything.

Wow, looks like the remainder of 2013 is my chance to buy the coins you guys normally snatch first :D

Please please please let another Kisthene nude Hoplite/pigasus appear!

Speaking of books, it's high time for me to get some. Since I like coins from what is now Turkey and north Africa, I should start with that. Maybe the appropriate SNG Cop volumes?

I have funds for maybe one more purchase before Christmas but not from Roma. Going to have a close eye on Pecunem tomorrow though.

Pecunem always has interesting things and usually at reasonable prices. Guess it's time to review my Pecunem watch list :)

I was thinking about it but after currency conversions, fees, and shipping there wasn't anything I wanted that badly. This is especially considering a couple of other auctions coming up.

I didn't bother bidding on the one lot I was interested in at Pecunem as it has already been bid to the moon and back. The USD is at a pretty significant low as of late which is unfortunate for some of the upcoming auctions - here's to hoping it recovers!

Soon after writing that Pecunem usually has reasonable prices, I checked my watch list. Wow, a few of them did get insanely high bids, not even factoring in the exchange rate.

There are ~50 on my watch list for the Pecunem auction alone. Not that I have any intention of bidding on most of them, maybe one or two, depending on how the wind blows. But it is fun to watch certain types of coins at each auction so as to better understand what to expect when I do find the one I really want.

About that exchange rate-- yep, it was a deal killer for many of those Roma lots but I did get a few coins which were unloved by others and not too painful in USD.

A good example of insanity-- this Otho Securitas denarius.

The estimated hammer was ridiculously low (€200) and the current bidding ridiculously high (€3000, $4046) While it is an unusually good portrait, the flan shape and lack of full legend would bother me at that price. Not that I had any intention of getting it...

Indeed - this is the exact coin I was speaking about as well. I thought it would be a good time to get an Otho... apparently not! It's at 3500EUR now. My other bid was going to be on the Caracalla "Four Seasons" denarius which is a nice coin for the type but was bid up to 3000EUR over a week ago and I just can't justify it at that price: it would be the most expensive Caracalla denarius ever sold, as far as I can recall.

Reviewed my Pecunem list, didn't put bids on most of them. Halfheartedly bid on a Smyrna, Ionia bronze depicting the poet Homer, seated; outbid twice. I can probably find a better one and I'd really prefer a bust of Homer bronze anyway.

After whittling down the list all that remain are some Provincial bronzes, maybe I'll bid on one.

And wow, that Caracalla "Four Seasons" denarius is a very interesting coin! Too bad the bids went off the charts.

I wonder why this Pecunem auction is so nutty? In past months they've been my best source of interesting coins at good prices. Almost all of them are hammering for crazy prices compared to recent comps.

The Caracalla just closed for 4250EUR, so over $6K with the BP/exchange rate - no regrets here for not getting it. I think perhaps enough people have come to realize Pecunem was bringing low prices so they all are now bidding heavily because it would still be "relatively low" to the other houses.

It makes you wonder who's bidding: collectors, or speculators?

See I don't mind participating in the same auctions as TIF and AJ because we play in way different ballparks.

I am still in TeeBall while they are both in like Div A of College level. While AJ you are maybe minor league I can't put you in the majors because I can't see you slammin down 100k for a coin.

I did end up getting one of the coins I bid on. This is the teeball level coin I was chasing. This one was eye appeal over anything else.
