Hi, From first look it seems that the edges of the rim are beveled like a Business strike rather than a 1917 proof. Look at the photos in this this thread of the rim appearance and non beveled edges. http://www.cointalk.com/t98069/ Jim
I know this is an old post, but i have a 1917 that looks like a proof ! heres some pictures from pcgs of a 1917 regular strike heres some pictures of my 1917 the rim on this coin is as square as it comes !
The angle of the rim to the edge has to be a right angle with no chamfer ( bevel ) on the point of where they intersect.
That book has been superceded in my opinion by Flynn's book that has more info. http://www.amazon.com/Lincoln-Matte...3747&sr=8-1&keywords=kevin+flynn+matte+proofs
If it does exist how much do you think a 1917 matte proof penny would be worth I think I may have one. My coins looks very similar to the 1916 matte proof and has a lot more detail then an uncirculated 1917 penny even an early strike. Have matte proof edge as well.
I don't know how to post a picture on here but I am taking the coin to the Baltimore show next week and I am gonna have NGC grade it if you read about the coin anyone coming out you will know it was mine. But I really don't know the value if it is real. It will be the first one ever graded.
Just looking at the rims one needs to go no further. Your coin, at least in the image provided, has beveled or rounded rims. They need to be razor edge sharp, outside and inside.
Can you get a closer photo of the rims? There needs to be a 90º angle at the corners (from the side to the field and from the side to the bottom edge).
let me see what i can do pictures are deceiving i showed the coin to some friends and dealers they said it has a good shot and is worth getting graded. the details in lincoln's hair and beard and the lines in his forehead look almost 3 dimensional and looked a lot like the 1916 matte proof picture i found. i have hundreds of BU wheat pennies including older dates and none of them have that much detail it looks like it was struck twice. only problem i have with it is the coin looks like it was dipped at one point
