There are quite a few misplaced dates on the 88 IHC. Yours a 1888 variety 31a http://www.indiancentvarieties.com/1888_variety031.html
Why is it I couldn't find anything about that until I came out here and you directed me towards Indian sent varieties.com. you people are the only ones who know what you're talking about.
I have an Indian Head Cent that I got from my father. I don't know much about them yet. I've got too many projects now and I don't really know where to start. I have an IHC for every date, yet I don't know what to look for to find out if there are any coins with special codes. Is there a "cheap" book to find out what to look for. I don't have the 1877. Any help would be appreciated.
The website WWW.USAcoinbook.com has a section with values. I paid $200 for this one more than 50 years ago and the spot has not changed on the reverse, and now one would be about 10X as much. That price was about 1/4 of my month's salary as I remember. Jim
Paddy54., I went to Indian varieties.com and checked out my 1888 Indian Head .for the life of me I cannot make heads or tails of that, hey I just made a joke but seriously how come they don't give a price on what something like that is worth I've noticed that on a lot of sites. Instead of beating my head against the wall for another half a day what is this thing worth thank you
In its condition not alot... in value other than a variety coin. Which for some dates like 1888 can range from very desirable to less than. Errors, die pairs, varieties values from what one is willing to pay...to a few bucks each.
I bought coins like that in a lot, maybe .50 to a dollar a piece in that grade. That coin is low grade and common. I think you can sell it for $2.50. How much did you pay for it? What I need is 1871, 1877, 1908-S, and 1909-S.
Jim Dale you can get an affordable 1877 (in poor condition), but even with those, it's a very counterfeited coin/ altered date.
AU has a wide range of grades. While this is the key date of the series I find it odd that other coins with MUCH lower mintages sell for a fraction of the 1877, 1909-S VDB, 1916-D Merc, etc. I guess it's supply and demand but it makes those "final album fillers" cost more than they should, and there are plenty of other issues that are overlooked. For example I have a 1921 Pilgrim commem half. Yes it's true that these were saved, but only 20,000 were minted. And this can be had for around $200 in high grades.
Missing the 1877 as well the 16 D . I had a xf 77 that like a lot of them had a pitted surface. Now out of affordable range I have decided not to worry about a coin slot that If filled wouldn't add to the collection. So no 16 D no 77 ...
