I found this at work and when I looked it up on ebay, I see one guy who sold 57 of them for $1.99 each and another guy who sold 5 of them for $14.99 each. A few listing say that they're rare coins (they're probably exaggerating) but when I tried finding out how many were minted I had no luck. I am just surprised at the prices that I am seeing on ebay, when I found it I just assumed that it was an ordinary canadian quarter with a different design. Also, I can see a clear reflection of myself in this coin, it's very shiny. (The blue that you see in the picture is a reflection of my wall.) Is this coin really as valuable as it's selling for on ebay?
These are not rare. Mintage = 15.4 million pieces. The very highest grade examples may command double digits, but run of the mill UNC pieces shouldn't cost more than a few bucks.
I thought that 15.4 million was a small amount, especially because people collected 2009 nickels that have a mintage of around 50 million.
Mintage of 15.4 million is smaller compared to most other contemporary dates, but it's still too many to command a significant premium. The 1991, however, is considered key with a mintage of 459 thousand. Uncirculated examples trade for at least $10, and even rough circulated examples (if you can find any as people knew of the low mintage early and tended to hoard these rather than spend) will get $5 any day of the week easily.
