That's right, my Lincoln series, complete.

Went into the local coin shop today to try and get something nice for my collection and I also brought the 1856-O Seated quarter that was toned blue that I posted on here as a partial trade for some other coin. He made a very nice deal of $40 back of what he sold it to me for. Said he'd give the difference off a coin.

He had some people that were in his shop trying to sell some gold including a 1905 Double Eagle. I got a little excited because he said he'd hold a Saint Gaudens for me when he got another one in and this could be the one! We waited for him to finish with his customers before we sat in the chairs provided. The Saint Gaudens was a no deal as they wanted a lot of money for it so I was a little bummed but still excited to see what else he had.

I asked him what else he had that weren't in the show cases. Out comes a small basket full of raw and graded coins. Pulls out a 1909-S VDB NGC F12, turn it over, $1,000 sticker:confused:. Then I see a small plastic cent and ask to see that, a RAW 1909-S VDB in close to the same condition as the NGC F12, I ask the price. He said the 1856-O quarter plus a few hundred dollars cash. The 1856-O according to another dealer was doctored, so it was a details coin AU details, but still details. I did notice the nick in the rim on the reverse, but it's still a freaking 09-S VDB, the one and only coin I need to complete my series. It wasn't what I went in there planning to buy, but I was one happy camper walking out the door! :D:D:D:):):)

Took me 22 years since I started collecting wheat cents but here is the last puzzle piece, my 1909-S VDB

Congrats on completing your set! I'm in the midst of it myself...missing a few of the better dates, plus the big ones like 1914-D, 09S, 09S VDB.

Any specific thoughts about what to collect/work on next now that your set is done?

Well I had an almost complete Mercury dime set that was only missing the 1916-D that I sold in order to buy this coin. I had bought the dime as a set from a local dealer for a little above melt, so I wasn't as attached to that as I am my Lincolns.

I want to start a Barber set, I don't know if it's going to be dimes or quarters. I also want to start putting together an Indian set. I think they're beautiful coins as long as they have detail.

My advice on getting those early dates, buy books on eBay that are mostly complete running auctions. That's how I obtained many of my coins. Most of my early D&S mint marks came from one book I bought on eBay(11D, 12DS, 13DS, 14S, 15DS, 21S, 24D, 31S). It was only missing the 1909-S VDB and the 1914-D. The price I paid would have been like buying the 1931-S and the 1909-S, everything else was free. I went through and took out what I needed, sold the rest one by one on eBay. I got 14 coins I needed for my series, and made roughly $40 selling the ones I didn't need. It was a gamble, but that time it paid off.

Good luck with your Lincoln set!

Mine might be complete, but that doesn't mean there isn't room for upgrades!

    Well done.
    Sit back, relax and smile.
Then start thinking about what's next.

    22 years!!!

That's why I don't go for large sets (Seated Liberty, Barber, etc.)
    I don't have 22 years left.
I only need 5 more IHC's but at an average of one per year it's beginning to get tight.

Glad to see you had both the passion and persistence to complete the series.

It's also nice to see you had the good sense to compromise on the quality of a coin like the 09-S VDB, which is such an overvalued coin. Spending "all of the money" on a hyped key date like that deprives one of the ability to acquire more coins that are legitimately more rare, at less cost.

So many collectors covet and buy the coins that price guides imply are the rarest when, in fact, there are many more available than justify the going price . . . ever think about how many of that date you've seen in dealer's cases and on price lists? Too many for the money, in my opinion.

Kudos to you for finding a way to affordably fill that hole . . . keep collecting.

I have filled an entire lincoln wheat book with bulk cents I buy all the time. I need the
    1909-s, 1909-s vdb, 1914-d, 1922 no d and a 1931-s. Mine would be done. I have been collecting for 3 years.

    34-date are all RED Gem BU's, teens in BU, 09, 10, 12, 16, 17, 20's in BU 20, 23, 25, 26, 27, 28, early 30's in BU, 30, 30s, 32

Lots of work on the early teens.... some of them are in VF or XF, but others like the 1913 need upgrading.

I'm working on photographing all my Lincolns, here's the start.

    Congrats on completing your set!

I personally am making myself not purchase any semi-keys or any lincolns pre-1936 until I pick up the 09-S VDB and 14-D so that the rest of the purchasing will be a breeze.

    copied from above....

I want to start a Barber set, I don't know if it's going to be dimes or quarters. I also want to start putting together an Indian set. There are lots of coins sets I want to do, but how many of them can I actually get. I also am wanting to work more on my US Type Set in NGC slabs. I'm also going to be upgrading some of my Lincolns to at least XF or better for most dates.

I'm breaking up a few other sets I had started like my 1891-1921 Morgans and my Peace dollar sets. After buying a few slabbed Morgans, I just don't see myself wanting to buy those type of coins to put into an album, the slabs tell me exactly what I'm buying. My Morgan and Peace Dollars are heading up on eBay soon so I can get some more money gathered to make my next purchase.

I've found I make too many dumb decisions when I buy raw coins(outside of my coin comfort zone), as with the 1856-O Seated Quarter. I seen the coin, fell in love with the toning... then found out I paid a lot of money for a problem coin.... luckily he has a nice exchange program.
Here's what I traded along with some cash for the 09svdb

    56o.JPG

I am currently looking at the 1856-S $5 Gold Eagle in a PCGS AU53 holder. I'd have to sell the other gold coins I have in order to buy this one so I'm still on the fence..... I guess we'll see.
