Kids got a box of Kennedy Half Dollars from the grandparents. One, a 1974, has peculiar coloring. Is this an error or merely damage? IMG_5325.jpeg IMG_5323.jpeg IMG_5324.jpeg IMG_5326.jpeg

Looks like it was in some form of holder which had 4 clasps on the front of it.

It was previously searched, someone marked it with pen so that you'd know. No errors, no nothing.

People ( collectors or hobbyists) would mark coins and bills. A man would come in daily with $20,000 in one dollar bills and swap out daily at the bank. Looking for errors, etc. I think some would like to see if they would find their markings again one day.

Yes and the RED Xs… other various markings. Worked in banking seeing many different kinds of markings. Have to admit, no one never mentioned belt buckles but makes sense. My uncle made many in the day which hmm I need to find. I wish I were looking or interested while in banking. The millions we dealt with, markings, errors, etc I did not think of it much. I guess focusing on my job. I do think of, wow I think of the high grades that came through. Oh well someone bought them here maybe. Kudos to them! :)

It looks like it was plated (gold color) after being put into whatever type of retainer it was in.

You should see all the horrors of coin jewelry, or other "ornaments" made from coins.

I remember in the 1970s, several centuries ago, we would drill a small hole in coins and use toothpicks to "stack" them to make coin Christmas trees in Cub Scouts.
Coins, as a base material, usually costs less than buying other similar materials such as washers or anything else round. Looks cool too.
