Hey everyone - I know the photos aren't the best (best I can do with my phone right now) - I am hopeful that I've picked up an inverted MM. What do you think? I'll take better photos once I get home... Thanks!
nice coin either way . I love the design of the standing liberty quarters. I'm not sure about the mintmark because my coins are locked away and I don't have anything to compare it to. the red book says that in 1928 two different size mintmarks were used but don't list any difference in the price of them.
It does look like it could be an inverted S based on the photo posted, although I think a better picture is needed to really tell.
I've heard of repunched MMs for the '28'-S but not an inverted one . It's not in Breens or Clines book either . A close up of the MM will be needed to tell .
Getting ready to leave now - the inverted s is actually in the cherrypickers guide as FS-501, while the RPM is FS-502. (I also own two of those s/s) Will get better photos once I'm home.
Sorry Bro , I don't know how I missed it in my Cherrypickers guide . Looks like the inverted variety to me . Nice pick up .
Not a problem, sir! I'm a very happy camper if these are BOTH FS-501...yes, that's right...I found two. For $8/each. Not a bad day for a flea market with little new material...
They both can't be 501's, the mint mark positions are different. The middle pic would be the closest to 501 as far as position and it might be a possibility.
Just looking at your images and the ones in the CPG and Coinfacts. To me the first image is a 501 and the third is 502. I don't feel the second is the 501 variety.
Humor me for a minute guys. I am, compared to most of you great folks, a rookie. This thread had been bugging me so I started doing some research. I found a coin matching this description, that was graded by ANACS, on ebay. It has a pic from The Cherrypickers Guide of 501. It just looks like the MM took a hit. Is it in any way possible that this isn't really a variety? If you look at the S mintmark styles on CONECA, the larger serif is on the top on MMS-002 (small S). The one it the CPG looks like it is correctly oriented to me, but with a gash running through it. Don't get me wrong. I am not calling anyone out. F & S have probably forgotten more about coins than I will ever know. I'm just making an observation. I would have definitely overlooked this variety. Here is the link to the pic on ebay and to the S mintmark styles on CONECA. What do you folks think? http://www.ebay.com/itm/1928-S-Stan...-30-FS-501-INVERTED-S-Mint-Mark-/190780103011 http://varietyvista.com/San Francisco Mintmark Styles.htm
To me the top pic looks closer to the 501 , but I'm a newbie when it comes to errors . I hope James or conder reads this , then we'd get an answer .
I guess I dont see it. All of the 501's I have seen have a vertical line in the top serif of the MM. Based on how I see these PICS Pic 1 is just PMD. Also look at the top serif here and notice the diagonal mark on teh MM.. Pic 2 has promise but can not be certain with the pic provided. Pic 3 is indeed an S/S
I think it would be important to look at the mint mark position as d.t.menace pointed out in post #9, and compare it to a known photo of the inverted S. Larry Nienaber
Well I guess we need better pics , as I trust Jim M. opinion on anything to do with errors after all he's one of the top men at CONECA .
