I'm in the AU-53 group but a 55 wouldn't surprise me at all . That is one beautiful design , definitely one of my favorites . Great pick up Matt .
This is a toughie... as others have said AU-58 sounds right but I could see it coming back AU-53 OR MS-61 and would not be shocked. Excellent original luster for as early as the coin is, this one honestly is kinda got me stumped. I can honestly see it coming back MS-61 or AU-58, kind of a good example of a TRUE Slider, just my 2 cent piece. She's a beauty that's for sure, regardless of what any TPG says. I'll take this opportunity to say (again) that I would be more than happy to give you 2x its melt value should u be in need of some fast cash ; ) I will hold my breath as I eagerly await your acceptance of my strong offer. LOL... all kidding aside. Killer piece Matt, I would be proud to own such a fine example.
Maybe I'm being stupid, but I don't see how in the world could this be near AU58. Look at the wear on the stars and especially the drapery! Unless it's determined to be a weak strike or the graders give it a boost for eye appeal and lack of field marks, it's XF45 to AU50, and I'm not known to be conservative. (Not trying to be contrary. I'd still love to own a piece like this).
The few MS examples I've seen haven't had the best strikes with slight weakness in the area you noted , to me it's more about the luster and lack of hits in the field is why I said Au - 53 to 58 . Remember these were extremely large amounts of money and hardly circulated except at banks , where they were counted regularly . That's probably where it received its wear . JMHO
Well guys the results are in... and I think PCGS was having a bad day. PCGS called this coin XF details improperly cleaned... I laughed at this grade and immediately cracked it out and sent it to NGC. It graded today at NGC as an no problem AU50.
Dang? You mean I was the only one to get it right - or at least what NGC though right? Regardless, it is a very nice coin.
Good one Matt , it wouldn't be right to have that beauty residing in an XF Detailed slab . Glad you sent it in to NGC .
And if you crack it and send it back to PCGS again it may well come back in a regular slab as AU50, Au53, or even XF45. The wonders of the TPGs
I think AU50 is reasonable. It's always hard to judge luster from a photo. I would want to see some luster to go higher than AU50. My first impulse was XF45. MAGNIFICENT coin in any event ! Man-o-man I love that stuff.
