I can't find a 1978 DDR Lincoln cent listed anywhere. When I looked at this one it just stuck out. I'm sure it is probably just die deterioration, but this coin looks a lot like a class 6. I know you guys have seen the cents with the sort of flattening ring slightly inside the rim. It makes the USA & ONE CENT look really thick. This coin is like that but without the flattening ring. The letters are nice and round. There are no signs of splits. Also, appearance of MD along the tops of some of the letters is just light glare from the LED's. Tell me if you think it is possible or just, what I call, die deterioration thickening. I just don't want to throw a possible discovery into the junk copper bin.
Go to a subforum and click the "post new thread" in the top right area. Jay, the coin you post is a tough one. It could be a deteriorated die, though I don't see heavy flow lines around the rim. I'll wait for the experts on this one.
When you go to the home cointalk page and see the titles like "US coins forum" or "error coins", you click it and it will take you to a list of posts. Then, look in the top right part of the screen and you will see it.
You are in the sub forum "Error Coins". There are quite a few others for different topics. Good luck. Non cents: I don't see the heavy flow lines either. I understand the heavy flow means LDS or even VLDS, but I think I am going to start a thread soon to try to learn how to determine the other die states. For example, how to tell the difference between an EDS and MDS.
this looks like ejection doubling to me which is one of the many forms of MD. sometimes a coin will bump into the sharp edges of the devices on the coin dies while it is being ejected from the dies. this gives the edge of the letters on the coins a sheared off look and some coin metal should be visible as a raised up edge on the top edge of the letters.
