Peace dollar grade and is it STAR * worthy at NGC?

I have been taking my time and gathering opinions on some potential submissions.
I would love to hear some input from those who have peace dollar submission experience.

What do you think about the One?
I am really hoping for a star grade on it.
The eye appeal is off the charts on this lovely lady.
Very lustrous and extremely vibrant color on the reverse.

    Greg,

I think you should be shooting for a problem free holder rather than a star designation. A few years ago, I attempted to assemble a toned Peace Dollar registry set. The venture was a complete failure as my set ended up being a collection of mottled monochromatic coins with just a couple that actually had rainbow toning. In all my time searching for NGC/PCGS graded Peace Dollars, I never found one with that powder blue/lilac color on the reverse of your coin.

I am not saying that your coin is AT, but I promise you that after David Hall's hyperbolic comments, the graders at both services are very tough on any Peace Dollar with rainbow color. Could that patina on your coin have been caused by years in a coin album? Sure! Will the graders at NGC see it that way? I just don't know man.

Furthermore, NGC has a very strict rule for the star designation. The toning must create exceptional eye appeal and there can be no areas where the toning approaches black. The obverse periphery of your coin approaches charcoal/black and would pretty much eliminate any chance at a star designation IMO.

Agree with above response. I would think it would grade, and the grade would be MS 64 with no star.

These are my two favorite Peace Dollars from that failed venture:

After seeing some MS66 Peace Dollars in hand, I lost my zeal for toned Peace Dollars. Photographs can't convey how impressive a premium gem Peace Dollar looks in hand, toned or not. In the end, I found that the key to this series is luster not color.

Geez, if that first one didn't get a star... they really are tough. I'll just table any peace dollar submissions for now.
I do have a few other beauties, but they can wait for now I suppose

I would submit them anyway. They will grade high, and perhaps, a couple of the rainbow ones may get the star grade. David hall is full of crap with his famous comment, so I think you have a chance.

Four years ago, David Hall, who is the President of PCGS posted this on PCGS Coinfacts:

CoinFacts - Any Peace Dollar with Rainbow Colors is Artificially Toned

The were some spirited discussions on the coin forums after the comment including some by homerunhall himself over on the PCGS forum. I can't find the thread on PCGS forum but here is a link to the thread on the NGC forum. You might recognize some of the participants.

"..any Peace dollar...that has any rainbow colors is artificially toned"

His statement was hyperbolic and kinda off the cuff, but basically what he meant was that any rainbow toned Peace Dollar should face the highest level of scrutiny with regards to its originality, which I believe.

I agree with the responses on the NGC board thread that it is utter nonsense, and that the coins faced the same storage issues that the Morgans did only a few years earlier. I think David Hall was known for his outrageous statements, so as to promote controversy (and increase customers) within his branch of the hobby. Peace dollars with market acceptable toning have been around for years, and I find them as desirable and only slightly less plentiful than Morgans of a similar vintage, plus or minus 40 years. Conditions for storage and album composition didn't change much in that 40 year period--air conditioning wasn't prevalent until the 1950s and later on. PCGS seems to have benefitted from toned Peace Dollars, and PCGS has made a ton of money slabbing them. I bet David made his share in selling toned market acceptable coins as well, as he is a well-known collector as well as PCGS guru.

Well that was quite a remark by Hall!
That was a great read on the NGC thread. Some of those guys are master debaters for sure.
I won't even bother discussing it. Frankly, I'm sick of hearing my self talk about.

I say certainly submit them with your next batch. I think you said 40 coins, right? They are great coins, and you will want them in plastic to get the most money if you decide to unload them in your eBay store. If one of the grades surprises you (in a good way), and they are worthy of your Type set, then there you go. Regardless of the Star odds, these coins should ride along with your Jeffersons, if for no other reason that one batch of coins is going to cost you less shipping than multiple future smaller batches.

Plus, I want to see that TPG grades on these coins 40 days from now, not 6 months.... :D
