This looks like a small date to me what do You think? http://www.lincolncentresource.com/smalldates/1970Ssmalldate.html
it has all the features as a Small Date the 7 is slightly lower than the rest of the numbers. http://www.lincolncentresource.com/smalldates/1970Ssmalldate.html
yeah look at the 9. it is sharp on the bottom and the top also look at liberty the liberty on large dates are no like this. read what it says..... http://www.lincolncentresource.com/smalldates/1970Ssmalldate.html
From the link you posted. The easiest way to tell the difference is to look at the 9. If the loop of the 9 bends sharply toward the 7, it is a small date. If the loop of the 9 is angled toward the top of the mintmark, it is a large date. The nine in the small date is also "wider" looking than the 9 in the large date.
Sorry, Tommy...looks like a Large Date to me too after comparing it to my SD. That 7 is too far below the 9 and 0...as others have said.
A third way to tell the difference is by looking at the word LIBERTY. In the small date the word LIBERTY is weak, especially the (top of the E and Y.) In the large date the word LIBERTY is struck well with no letters blending into the field. -Lincoln Cent Resource why does the LIBERTY on this cent have the same attributes as a small date? The on LIBERTY is exactly what they describe above. I also did an overlay and the 9 matches exactly with the one on Lincoln cent resource. also I made a line across 1970 in one of those pics and it is also flat not slanted and the 7 is not exactly even with the 19 and 0 look at the the pictures. Im going by the pictures on Lincolncentresource because most of You are saying it LOOKS LIKE a large date thats not a definite answer.
The curve of the 9 is blunt and not pointed. The hight of the 7 on your coin does not match a small date. Though you may not want to hear it, you coin is a large date...sorry. As to why LIBERTY as the same attributes...could be a number of reasons. A weaker strike, grease in the die, coupled with a late die stage could produce similar effects. However, LIBERTY is not a definitive yes/no...ALL the attributes need to be the same, and in the case of your coin, they are not.
I just got an email back from someone very credible. its a small date!!! and Im going to post this again before I you guys debate on this thread. A third way to tell the difference is by looking at the word LIBERTY. (In the small date the word LIBERTY is weak, especially the top of the E and Y.) In the large date the word (LIBERTY is struck well) with no letters blending into the field. -Lincoln Cent Resource its telling You right here one of the ways to distinguish a small date is.. so then I have a large date with a small date LIBERTY.. lol
it is not blunt it is pointed.. show me where its blunt? please im going to post pics of just the 9 I shouldn't have because its already been confirmed but im going to do it cause im a good sport and Non Cents You been helpful to me.
It also appears to point to the bottom of the 7/top of the mintmark instead of the middle like a small date...maybe it's just the pics. May I ask who the "credible person" you emailed was? Just wondering...
I always start with the direction the upper tail of the 9 is pointing. It's always correct. Are you saying Lincolncentresource is wrong?
It is definitely a large date cent. Another way to tell is that there is the appearance of a line that goes across the 7 where the top of the seven meets the leg of the seven. I added an image of your coin where I highlighted what I mean.
This is a large date cent. Most of the factors do not match up. Particularly the 9 is cut off at the inner loop end, and pointing to the MM, not the 7, as well as the top of the 7 does not line up with the zero. Take a look at this small date and compare yours with it, you will see they do not match up. And, LIBERTY, the whole word, is usually weak, not just the "Y" on the end, which is what trips up a lot of folks. In addition, the IGWT on top will also have a weak strike.
