The empire started under QE which is when the east India co gained their royal charter. The portcullis was their coin to use over there, however it wasn't until Charles II when more Indian coinage was being minted likes of the Bombay copperoon. There essentially was 2 British empires though. I guess the 2nd empire really kicked it up a gear in the end of the Georgian era and beginning of Victorian when they moved in on global domination. Also for anyone looking for it in a conder catalogue, it's classed as a Durham South Shields halfpenny. South Shields is a small town inbetween Sunderland and Newcastle, it has been an important shipping town for well.. Ever. It was there that the royalist forces moved in on the Cromwell lead army into the battle of Boldon hill. It is also the oldest Muslim settlement in the uk this was even noted by the Romans as they named the fort here "arbeia" meaning Arabs. It has the oldest paper from England being the shields gazette. It is on the river Tyne and was majorly noted for its ship building and port mining was also a major industry here (port of Tyne) it's not classed as Durham these days it is now a metropolitan borough of Tyne and Wear. All of the shipping and mining industry is now gone and all that the town gets now is tourism from the beaches Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk - now Free
