The cents have a chance to be the wide A M variety which could be worth a bit of money.

Would you need to look at the reverse to check this?

Amen to that but I'm just not a modern coin guy just paid similar money for a dollar but it was 205 years older and silver I lose interest after 1900 with the exception of st gaudens $20s and especially with the mintages of modern coins 10 million where you can pick up 19th c coins with mintages in the tens of thousands and silver or even gold fore mere hundreds or less

I normally agree... but rare is rare... this coin has a mintage of 5,500 coins or less... which for a modern coin.. is very small.

I thought there were three quarters of a billion of them made.

Peter, I don't think he is referring to just "any" dollar or coin found in the Cheerio's box. There is a rare variety(?) or different reverse used on some of the dollars by which two of the tail feathers are enhanced on the coin compared to a normal strike of the year. THAT is the rare coin.

I know that, I just think with 750 million of these things that nobody wants, and most of them were never ever circulated, that it's a bit silly to value a sub-group of them because the feathers on the back might be a bit prettier than the rest.

Exactly how many Sheldon or Overton for example or many other die varieties are extremely rare yet the coins bring very little significant premium (with a few exceptions) over any other example of the date and in my opinion early us coins are about a thousand times more attractive and are actually copper silver and gold unlike any circulations strikes nowadays

I remember when they first came out and someone gave me some I couldn't wait to get rid of em just like nobody wanted "Carter's quarters" in the late 70s and early 80s

Perhaps just as silly as the "wounded Eagle" variety which sells for hundreds.

The actual mintage of the "pattern" reverse (which is what it really is) is questionable since NGC has found examples that were in official untampered Cherrios packaging that did NOT have the pattern reverse.

Given this, 5,500 is definitely not in the cards. It's possible that a bulk of the coins were not the pattern reverse. But then its possible that a bulk of them ARE the pattern reverse.

    No one knows for certain.

But the chances of that are extremely slight. So far not a single Cheerios cent has been a WAM.
