It's had a rough life since leaving the mint only 7 years ago. What happened to it out in circulation is anyone's guess.
If anyone did this intentionally they did a pretty good job making the rim flow with the rest. With my shaky hands there would be all kinds of nicks gouges or not much of the coin left.
You are correct @Laurie B as it is damaged. It doesn’t matter what happens when a coin gets damaged as it’s damaged snd on modern coins it’s only worth face value. Good job, you’re learning.
I suspect it is "road rash" from parking lots of fast food or liquor stores ( other members have mentioned such). Jim
