Question, is that cardboard dust all over the coin or are it raised metal by date and all over the reverse?
I don't know if it is large or small star variety. Sorry to be no help. I collect the 1838 dimes with no stars. These photos were taken a long time ago. Both coins depicted grade AU-something.
the photos are the sellers photos, i have not received the coin yet. it looks like raised metal by the date and on the reverse of the coin.
Not small. http://www.seateddimevarieties.com/Table_of_Contents.htm Look around, spend some time, and try to match it up.
i am aware of the website that you posted the link to, and there are other websites with similar information on seated dime varieties. i asked the question in my post for the coin because i just don't see a lot of difference in the large and small stars varieties for 1838 seated dimes. i have studied the photos of them, maybe i am just too stupid to figure it out, did anybody ever think of that being the reason? i know for a fact, that i have spent at least 4 to 6 hours or more a day, (often times more than that) everyday for the past 5 years, researching coins. if that is not enough time researching, then i don't know what is.
Seriously... drop the pity party, and don't ask questions if you're just going to throw a hissy. I simply gave an opinion, shared a link, and made a suggestion, and instead of accepting it as an honest attempt to help, you choose to see it as an open to the woe is me nonsense? Sometimes you are just too much. For what little it is clearly worth to you, I give you much credit for trying to figure things out on your own instead of expecting others to do it for you. Too often people hoping to make money run here wanting questions answered, and have no problem preying on the kindness of members as long as it benefits them, but at least you're trying, so stop beating yourself up and questioning your abilities. You made the right call on this one IMO, so there was no reason to start the "I am too stupid" crap again. Here... approx 15% down the page there is a side-by-side comparison. IIRC, the small stars were half dime sized, so keeping this in mind may help you to see the difference. Good luck to you, sir. http://www.seateddimevarieties.com/Basic_Varieties.htm
it is in fact you, sir, who throws a hissy everytime i post a new thread about a coin. i have no idea why you follow me around on cointalk like a stray dog, making smart remarks about me? i would bet that i have done more research than most have on coins. that being said, that does not mean that i am better at it than others. my comments are not pity partys, they are based on the facts. the facts are that i have done the reasearch and often times i am still not able to figure it out. that can only mean that i am in fact, not smart enough to figure it out, what other reasons can there be? i don't mind if you or anybody else comments that i lack talent with coins. what i do mind is, all of your remarks about how i have not put enough time and effort into researching coins, because i have put in plenty of time and effort. i read some your posts a while ago and you mentioned to someone that you received advice years ago from someone about the world, ect. well, let me tell you something, the person who gave you that advice was very wrong about many things, and they have fooled you into thinking the total opposite of what is the truth. there are many examples of people who are complete jerks that are very rich and get what they want most of the time. that does NOT mean that they tried any harder than anybody else, in fact, often times they made less of an effort. so don't you go thinking that just because i have failed at everything, somehow means that i did not try hard enough, because i sure as heck did try hard enough. if you would get off of your butt and put half as much time into your own bussiness, instead of being critical of others bussiness, then you would probably be very rich.
Good grief, Charlie Brown...... Anyway, the small stars variety looks more like tiny asterisks. The coin in your pictures has more "star-looking" stars.
Oy vey… Regardless of what you may want to believe, a question was asked about something familiar to me, so I answered without giving much thought to who started the thread; unlike you, I try not to speak of what I do not know. Also, at least try to understand that even if a post is of no help to you, it may be to someone else, so there is no reason to throw a tantrum over an honest contribution, even if from someone you do not like. Just because you may have started a thread, this does not mean it belongs to you, sir. Please continue….
It's not that much better on a smaller laptop screen, but I see what you're talking about. However, it looks as if it may be artifacts on/in the flip and/or the coin, but I would not want to make an absolute call going only on such images. Overall, the coin does look okay to my eyes.
Book gave a really cool link that is very helpful to those with questions about Seated Dimes. Years ago you actually had to pay to even look at it. This same site can more than answer the simple question the OP posted. I use the old Brian Greer book and the same site. Between the two, I find most every answer that most would need.
wrong again, sir. i don't care if you or anybody else posts comments about the coins and information about coins. that is fine. post a thousand comments about coins if you like. the part that you just can't seem to understand is that when you accuse people of not making an effort, and you insult them in a personal way, without any good reason, what other type of replies would you expect? if you speak with disrespect towards others, without a good reason, then why should people show respect towards you. you seem to think that you are entitled to speak to people any way that you please. when did i ever say i owned any post or thread on here? show me where i said anything like that. you are not my boss and quite frankly, speaking to you is waste of my time and energy. and by the way, you did not make an honest contribution about the coin, you made up lies and slandering remarks about me in your comments, just the same way that you have been doing on here from the time that i joined cointalk.
It's possible some of what look like raised marks on the reverse are clash marks. Better images would be cool.
Go back and read post #7, which is what clearly set you off on this ridiculous tangent; nowhere in those 13 short words did I lie about, slander, insult, or accuse you of anything. If you truly do not care who participates, you would not be crying foul over such a neutral post; how a simple link to a much respected online reference is not an honest contribution, but is somehow lying about and slandering you, I do not know. Instead of seeing only what you want to, try reading what was actually said for a change. As for speaking with disrespect towards others, perhaps you should take a long look in the mirror. I've not called you stupid or a failure, but you constantly refer to yourself as such things and use anything said in response as an excuse to throw up your arms and cry personal attack, which is ridiculous, sir. I was not one of those who have laughed at you or made fun of the loses you've suffered, and regardless of what you wish to see or think, the only thing that I have done from the very start is offer honest suggestions in attempts to help you. The worst I've done is referring to your numerous self-deprecating posts and poor attitude as what they clearly are, so perhaps I should apologize for not doing enough to coddle you. I don’t edit the content of my posts, so all there for anyone wishing to see all the horrible and slanderous things I've supposedly said and done to you. With all due respect, if you wish to continue with this diatribe, please go find someone who cares; you're just not worth it, and for everyone's sake, I would much prefer to see the thread move forward on subject.
