hello all--newer to here, but have been collecting and roll searching for a long while. i have boughten slabbed coins but never sent anything in--but am considering needing to. I had a question, and is in clarification to what someone had told me---here goes--i know grading services will grade, or rather mark as ' Genuine' if cleaned, or such and such details, 'cleaned/ improperly cleaned.' Someone had told me they( Grading services) can tell if a coin had any sort of cleaning---even if just dropped in hot water, water, or dawn dish soap......I know if a coin is polished, abraded, acid dipped or acid dated, it is blatantly obvious---but what if you had a coin you did not think was cleaned, but went through the wash in someones pocket or was 'mildly' washed off ( no acid/polish) some time years ago???? if you send something in to be graded, are you just taking that chance?? is there any 'rule' to tell if cleaned if not obvious?? Thank you in advance for any help/replies/comments/info. and sorry so long winded.
Sorry to say their is never a way to be 100 percent positive i know people who have collect for years who still get coins graded with details or coins that grade in at much lower grades then predicted !!But it is part of the hobby because at the same time a coin you thought was an ms63 might be a ms65 or 64 it is all a part of the fun
I think the tpgs take a is it market acceptable approach . Still they have flagged coins as cleaned that haven't been just like they have graded coins that have been . It's a known fact that tpgs dip coins and "conserve" problem coins . So like you said unless it has been over dipped , scrubbed , and boiled they really can't say with certainty in 100% of the cases . Though they are quite good at telling if most coins have been tampered with just with their experience of seeing so many coins. Have you ever seen a coin that just quite doesn't look right , that's your experience telling you something happened , as you see more that happens more and more , but sometimes they're wrong . By the way , since the "sniffer" came out it can flag left over chemicals on coins with a good amount of certainty .
Yes - you are taking a chance they see something you did not and they mark it as genuine or put in a details slab. TPG's are not perfect, but still I like the big 2 the most(does not stop me from looking at others). I have seen coins I thought acceptable in details holders and seen coins I thought questionable in non-detail holders. Just my opinion.
