I picked up this curio cabinet for less than $20 at an auction last weekend. Solid wood with curved glass door.

That's actually a reasonable buy. 3-foot corner display? However, I don't get why you'd buy a wood cabinet to display your coins after being told repeatedly (in another thread you started) by multiple members that wood cabinets are horrible for coin storage.

Wow, that is a very good price on that. For once, I commend you for your purchase ;)

The cabinet has a vent hole. The good coins are stored in air-tites which lower their exposure to air.

It would be different if all those coins were store in one small wood chest, but that is a piece of furniture with a huge space of air.

I don't get why people fuss over wood, when many people smoke. If smoking can leave a film on things, and turn white walls, yellow, then certainly it isn't good for coins.

I'd be more worried about the various chemicals present in cigarette smoke that could damage coins before I would be worried about wood. I've also never seen coins damaged by wood, only toned or darken.

As far as I know, wood doesn't not actually cause a bad damage to a coin. While it can darken coins or tone them, it's not like it turns them black or eats them away.

So ya, to the people on here who smoke, besides damaging your body, I wonder what kind of damage the smoke you puff out does to your coins?

Wow! I am jealous. No one has said it, but did the coins come with it too, LOL:D

  10. I know this kid who bought a "MS" "toned" Walking Liberty for like 75 dollars. there was a tiny little hole in the plastic and the owner or the shop smoked heavily. It ruined the coin, it has a gross brownish-blackish tint to it. NOT "toning". So yea, smoking is WAY worse than wood on your coins.

Random comment: I hate when I order coins off eBay and they arrive smelling like tobacco smoke. The coins, the packaging, everything... stinks up my house and is extremely off-putting as a buyer (and non-smoker).

The piece of furniture was a steal at $20.

I like the treasure displayed in it. It's a delightful sight.

Recognize that if the house is ever burglarized, the treasure in that case will be the first thing the bad-guys spot & take. I might suggest that you only display a few really nice items and swap the really nice coins in & out of the display as you like. Hide the balance of the treasure. :)

Probably not as much as the rock tumbler and tarnex has to some of yours. Also, pointing to a worse environment for coins is not the way to justify your position.

If this is the way you wish to enjoy your present collection, and with all things considered, I see no great problem with it, especially since the price was right. When and/or if you ever grow tired of it, at least you can use the cabinet for other purposes.

Not that I blame you, and right or wrong, when buying from random people, this should be expected, is part of the game, and comes with the territory. As with anything in life, we must accept the good with the bad no matter how annoying or unfortunate it may be.

I never said I didn't expect it. Nor did I say that I could not accept it. Thanks for the comment nonetheless.

While in response to your post, it was meant mostly as a non-direct example of reasonable expectations for someone else. Perhaps I should have worded differently. ;)

If smoking is politically incorrect, isn't
    putting down smokers and smoking
    political?

I hate when I buy stuff off eBay, and it smells like smoke... then when I confront the seller about it, they say "I don't smoke, but you can return the item, if you wish." This seems to only happen when I get a steal of a buy.
