my grandma found a $10 national from the merchants bank of fort smith, Arkansas with a blue seal and the treasury serial number is 77778. does this serial number make it worth more? and is this a Rarer bank?
welcome? lol ive been on since like february , anyways, i probably cant get a decent picture because i dont have a digital camera there is a horizontal crease down the middle and some of the red/blue threads are showing in the plain areas. its still in pretty good condition because it has been sealed in an envelope probably 80 years. i can try to get a picture on my crapfone, but it will be really dark and not helpful.
The photo is a must to determine its grade. The $10 is the most common if it's from that particular bank. There were five different banks issuing these notes in Fort Smith. The charter number should read 7240. In Very Fine condition it would be worth $175 at retail. My reference says there are 100 - 200 in existence. But the picture will help determine that. Condition is everything. Also, retail may not be achievable when you sell it. You need to find a buyer with that particular note on his "want list". There maybe fees and commissions to be paid to advertise it. A dealer may offer you about $110 to $120 if he thinks he has a possible sale to someone. Less, if he has to sit on it in his inventory. People have a tendency to buy notes from towns they grew up in or lived in. So selling to a dealer in the Fort Smith area is a good way to get your best price. Still not a bad deal for a $10 note. As far as the serial number is concerned, you are one number off from hitting a home run. Unfortunately, as miss is as good as a mile, so no premium there.
