I mentioned recently in the thread about cherry picking that I had found a hidden gem in an auction on eBay. I got the coins today, and here is what I got. Hopefully someone isn't going to tell me I'm wrong about this. The coin is a 1917 French 25 centimes with a dash under the "Mes." Krause lists this at $30 in F, $50 in XF. I paid $2 for a lot of four coins of which this was part. I'm also attaching a photo of the coin without the dash for comparison.
I was sure someone else was going to notice this and bid it up. I sat for five anxious days waiting for the auction to end, but no one else ever bid.
Looks good to me. I know nothing about this coin, but found this: http://www.ngccoin.com/poplookup/world-coin-prices.aspx?category=35582&worldcoinid=102761
Thanks. It was very lucky because usually I don't even bother to search for rare coins because I figure I can't afford them, but I thought I'd try, and it popped up. Auction ending on a Friday, and the date was not mentioned in the title, so that helped.
Do you plan to keep it or sell it? I only ask because I've run into a few hard to find foreign coins...and usually they have to be slabbed to bring a decent asking price. Still, though, it's a good "trophy" piece. Congrats!
I plan to keep it. I always keep one copy of any coin and I sell any doubles I get. I was looking for this specific coin for my collection when I found it.
Hi HD Nice find and smart spotting Take a look at these two pages that will give you more info about them 1917 "dashed" Cmes : http://www.lefranc.net/monnaie,25-centimes-lindauer-cmes-soulign-,170.html 1917 "non-dashed" Cmes : http://www.lefranc.net/monnaie,25-centimes-lindauer,171.html Prices are in euros but you can turn them to dollars, and of course related to the french market (retail price, from professionnal dealers) Q
