Someone is selling this and saying it is a pattern. I'm wondering if it's a real coin or some sort of token.
well it could be a pattern coin. just looked in my Krause 19th century catalog for Scotland and every coin in it is made from silver. my guess it is a pattern coin. how much is he/she asking for it ? cool looking coin.
Think it's one of the base metal strikings mentioned here on the Goldberg auctions site: ".....privately minted 'retro' pattern produced by INA Ltd in Birmingham UK, in 2008, will be featured ........The dies will only be used to complete production of silver and base metal strikings and then they will be rendered unusable." The one the have listed is a 22ct gold of which only 1 was made: http://images.goldbergauctions.com/php/lot_auc.php?site=1&sale=48&lot=2262
Here's a pewter example of (the mintage of each base metal striking (1,000) is listed at the bottom of the listing) http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/item/107660330/Scotland_William_IV_1830_Pewter_Proof_Pattern_Crown.html
The seller was only asking $10 which was low enough for me to be interested, but if it was made in 2008 then it's not something I want. It's like reprint baseball cards.
But it's not what it looks like, so that makes me not interested. If a coin has a date of 1830 and is really made 170 years later, that's no good to me.
Definite fantasy crown, made in a variety of colors including copper, silver, gold and this one which is "antiqued" bronze.
