    Is it a proof?

I'm not sure. I found it in a box of nickels yesterday. The only proofs I have found to this point are recent ones, where Jefferson and Monticello really have the whitish looks to them. This one doesn't seem to have that, but the surface is extremely mirror like.

Strongly struck but I think I'm seeing hints of finger prints on it.

I agree there is definitely a smear/mark of some kind but can't quite tell if it is a fingerprint or not.

Any chance it could get MS65?

The obverse almost seems high relief, And is that a deep gash right below Monticello?

I doubt if it would go 65 . Straight on clearer pics would help , also I doubt it's a proof as the rims seem too rounded . Looks PL though . I'd give it a 63 By these pics .

    Definitely a proof. PF 58

The "stuff" on the coin was probably there when it was in the proof set.

Thanks, it definitely is neat to find these. I found a 63 a few weeks back that I think may be a proof as well, the surface is just as mirror like as this one.

You're probably right about it being a proof , but 1955 was the last year for boxed sets , they started using flat packs in '55 also . So I doubt that gunk was on it when it was in the flatpack . I've never seen a coin come out of a flat pack anything but pristine . What do you think Greg ?
