Hey Gang, I don't collect Barber dimes, but this was loaned to me to determine if this is a RPM or MD. It is a 1898 O. A quick check in the CPG shows nothing for this coin and CONECA doesn't go back that far. Ive listed on the CONECA forum, but its been there for a week with no response. What do you all think? Personally, I am confused....no comments Ken! It has the characteristics of mechanical doubling, but I have seen such mint marks before and thinking that it was MD and they were listed as RPM.
It is very flat that is why I suspect MD, but I have seen example like this where they were attributed as RPM. That is why I am confused.
Wreath looks doubled in the same orientation, so it's not an RPM. It's likely MD, but honestly, your image looks flat overall.
RPM means re punched mintmark. I cant remember correctly but I can remember part of what causes a RPM is when they had to strike the mintmark by hand or something and accidently did it twice. If it's just the mintmark then it's an rpm?
I'm fairly certain that the RPM designation specifically refers to the die being repunched, not the coin being restruck. Also, even if it were just the mintmark, the actual "look" of it indicates shelving, which would be machine damage/doubling, not RPM.
