Here's a rub a dub of one of my most favorite classic commems......

 

Ah green, if you like problem commemorative halves, here's one especially for you!
I love living in the Bay Area...that's the main reason I bought this coin.

 

1899 -o morgan dollar.

 

So what's the problem John? You ancient guys intrigue me........

 

It's an ancient phoney. The counterfeiters used silver-plated bronze to strike the fouree denarii, and the plating wore off over time. If enough wears off, you get the zombie coin effect.

On top of that the coin is a mule. The obverse belongs to Vespasian and the reverse to Domitian - I suspect someone stole a couple of random dies from the mint.

Roman penalties for counterfeiters were severe. It's fascinating and macabre to consider that the maker of that coin may have been fed to the beasts.

 

As well he should have. Roman Law should be applied to modern day Chinese.........

 

This coin was in a friends old, neglected Whitman album.

 

Another candidate. One which I plan to sell/trade to upgrade in the future.

This coin means a lot to me though. It was one my grandfather has passed on to me. A true treasure for sure.
