    I love living in the Bay Area...that's the main reason I bought this coin. :)

    It's an ancient phoney. The counterfeiters used silver-plated bronze to strike the fouree denarii, and the plating wore off over time. If enough wears off, you get the zombie coin effect.

    On top of that the coin is a mule. The obverse belongs to Vespasian and the reverse to Domitian - I suspect someone stole a couple of random dies from the mint.

    Roman penalties for counterfeiters were severe. It's fascinating and macabre to consider that the maker of that coin may have been fed to the beasts.

    This coin means a lot to me though. It was one my grandfather has passed on to me. A true treasure for sure.
