Hello--- I recently purchased an electronic safe for my coin books and sets. It's about 14 x 17 x 8 inches
and I am wondering if I should put something inside for moisture. The silica packs ? If so how often should they be replaced? Thanks---John

    John,
I have been using the EVA -Dry rechargeable de-humidifiers for years now. They come in two sizes that I know of. I have the EDV500 which is their largest one. They have a indicator when the silica beads get too wet and you just plug the unit into any outlet and let it "charge" for 12 hours. These larger units cost anywhere between $25-35. Look for good deals because they are out there. Good luck.

Thanks, I checked them out and the 333 which takes care of 333 cu ft is more than big enough for my safe. It figures to a little over ONE cubic foot so this definitely can handle my needs plus it is small, about 6x4x1 inches. Won't take up much room at all and costs about 25 bucks AND lasts for 10 years!!!! I am impressed!---John

    Just for possible future reference.
As your collection grows IF you think about insuring it you'll need a fire resistant safe.

Johnvan, I don't know what brand of safe you bought but just so you know, if you purchased a Sentry brand safe for your coins - you don't want to use it for coins.

They put off a lot of moisture inside the safe.

The irony of fire-resistant/-retardant/-proof safes is that they will likely damage the coins over time, anyway. The materials that protect the contents are unlikely to be inert.

That depends on the safe. Just like with anything else, you get what you pay for.

Can you recommend a particular brand that you are familiar with and that you would personally use. I have had my safe for 10 years now and have had ever increasing concerns that the interior materials may be hurting my coins in the long run. Of course, I may be worrying about nothing, but doesn't hurt to have a second choice.

I have owned an American Security safe for many years, never once had a problem and still don't. http://www.amsecusa.com/Burglary_and_Fire/

They don't even make the model I have anymore, but there are several that are similar.
