1. got a few jefferson nickels comming back from anacs, in email they list a superlative as 6S, what does that mean? 2. does a proof coin count as a variety? thanks..........ken
1. 6 steps on the reverse memorial. This is a good thing. It means that all six steps are showing fully, which implies high detail or a strong central strike. 2. No.
Rick is correct. The '79 & '81 type and type 2 mint marks would be a couple of examples. That said, just as with business strikes, not all date/mint combinations have any varieties.
I read the question posed by the OP as being whether it's necessary to pay a variety attribution fee simply because a coin is a proof. I did not read it as asking whether varieties existed for proof coins.
OK, but if you want a Proof coin attributed as a variety, yes it is necessary that you pay the extra fee for doing that. Otherwise, even if the Proof is a variety, it will not be attributed as such and marked on the slab.
ok so if i send in a 1959 proof lincoln to be graded as a proof do i pay the extra fee ? i would expect to pay the extra fee for a 1960 proof small date as i consider that a variety. but would'nt they be able to recognize the coin as a proof even if i dont specify it as such? see i have a 1959 mint proof set (my birth year) an i want to get all five coins graded, that was question in OP, would i have to pay extra fee to have them graded as proofs?
