The $20 LC set has competition I've been working on it for about a year now and at about 36 cents with an average price at about 18 at the moment including an 1857 and about 14 average without the 57. If your willing to hunt and wait you can put together a very nice set in that average range.
I was doing that for years problem is my real love is pre 1807 especially the liberty cap and the '93 varieties not doable for $20 unfortunately
Not true not true so far the $20 LC set includes 1798, 1800-1803 as well as an 1807/6 though I admit I cheated a bit on the 1801 (it was a swap) also you check the figures I gave on price average you'll see that the 1857 cost me a fair bit over $20 but I admit I expect the end average price to hit about 25 dollars and the chain cent will be a copy.
here are a few, pics I already have on hand (most of these cents have already been posted here if you look for the $20 LC set you will find them and many others)
Wow nice. I ended up getting mine for about $30. Its a strong G but small corrosion I think. Those are rough, but good if you got them for 20 or less If you dont mind, where do you get yours from?
some links as well http://www.cointalk.com/threads/its-arrived-1798-large-cent-d.222690/#post-1639348 http://www.cointalk.com/threads/2-new-additions-to-the-20-large-cent-set-d.221935/ http://www.cointalk.com/threads/a-surprise-addition-to-the-20-large-cent-set.222434/ if you want more I'm sure you can do a search yourself
some e-bay, the 1801 I swaps a few bucks in junk silver for from another member here, a few others from dealers I know. is a slow process but I try to add at least 1 a month (this most was a very nice 1831 for 24 after shipping if I remember right. Is just a matter of being willing to hunt, ebay has treated me well where LCs are concerned for a lot of my low grades, hell I got my 1957 there as a snipe I never expected to land at under 150 and both of my best dealers have offered me close to double that for it it is not really a $20 large cent but fits with the set and anyone knowing the least about LCs doesn't expect me to have picked it up in that actual range again is a $20 average per coin so those cheapies I pick up in the under 10 searches let me grab a few on the nicer side as well (have a 1828 that would probably get xf/au though it was harshly cleaned.
yeah thats my think, is I find a lot that are problem coins more than worn ones. Im not doing too bad though. I think I will start a thread soon of my $20 large cent. My average is $25 though lol.
If you think that ones fun you should see my newest, the $50 bust half set lol so far only 4 1829, 1830, 1832 and 1836 2 details but all vg/f so a nice start
Nice job. I found a few bust cents for about $15 so once I knock those out within a few months, I can get started with nice VG+ classics and newer
That is one of the great things about large cents is you can collect them cheaply with a few exceptions from 1800 on the only expensive one is 1804 and most from 1794 on except 1799 can be found for under $100
This was my only US large cent. Sold recently, and now I'm casually looking for another one hopefully in better condition. I'm not a US collector per se, but maybe I've been bitten by their intrigue?
Yeah I just got my large cent album in the mail today. Looks great other than the holes being too big to hole the coin still in place. Still a nice album eithrt way
People will probably see all the issues with this one, but its the first one I bought and I still am incredibly pleased with it.
reaper, I see a large cent with great details that's been around and probably has a great story behind the damage Just be careful LCs are addictive.
