Is anyone going to the NY International Numismatic Convention? (that's the link to it). Im allowed to go to one coin show a year so I chose this one because its approx. 1 hour away and sounds really well constructed. Check it out tell me what you think
I live in NJ but it only takes me an hour. Its like 2 blocks from where my dad works lol what a coincidence
The NY show is a fantastic venue for world & ancient coins. Unfortunately, I almost always miss it because it conflicts with the FUN show which is held in Florida. (It is normally more warm & sunny in Florida than NY in January). Unless my plans change, I won't be at the NY show January 2014. If you collect World or ancient coins, please post one of your favorites.
Here is one of my favorite World coins. It is a 500 Lire from Italy. The obverse depicts a young girl in medieval dress and the reverse depicts the three ships sailed by Columbus.
FUN Show - Orlando, FL - January, 2014 - 1,000+ dealers - Temps in the 70's - What more could you ask for! Chris
I used to go to the NYINC when it was held in December. Unfortunately it was held in the world trade center. Since then, they had to move to the Waldorf and only Jan was open. I hear its somewhat disjointed. Make sure you check around to all of the different areas where dealers are located, since they are not all in one big room like most shows.
It is indeed a fantastic show for the world and ancient collector. I attended in 2009 and was most impressed with what I saw there. Plus, it's held in one the most opulent of venues, the Waldorf Astoria Hotel. It's almost worth the trip just to experience the surroundings.
I don't know what your interests are, but you should be aware that this show is heavily slanted toward foreign coinage and that the FUN show (one of the two largest US shows) will be going on the same week in FL and will siphon off a vast number of dealers who specialize in US coinage. If your interests lie with US coinage and you are in NJ and one hour from NYC then you may be able to attend the Philadelphia Whitman show in September or any of the three Baltimore Whitman shows in the spring, summer and fall. The Baltimore shows are incredibly well run and heavily attended and the inner harbor where they are held is mighty nice.
Could you give me a link for the philly one please... i was going to go to the psgs coin expo but later i found out it was 200 dollars a person...
Mostly just ancients/international man. Of course US dealers will know US coins, but it will not be their specialty for the most part. Like others have said, most US dealers will be at FUN.
You can bring whatever you like, but this show is an international show that is meant primarily for collectors of foreign coinage. The link for the Whitman shows will give you information on both the Philadelphia and Baltimore shows. By far, the Baltimore fall show is the better of all of these options.
FWIW, The Bay State Coin Show is in Marlborough Massachusetts tomorrow and Saturday. It is advertised as the largest coin show in New England. Here is a link: http://www.baystatecoinshow.com/ I will be at the Bay State show tomorrow. If any CoinTalkers are planning to be at Bay State, send me a PM & maybe we can meet at the show.
Im probably going to the whitman expo the 21st! ill probably have my us mint shirt on so if you see me say hi! lol
The 21st is Saturday, which is the last day of the show. If you go on the last day of the show you will find quite a few dealers have already packed up and left while others will pack up early in the day.
Yeah, its a sore point with many. I completely understand dealers wanting to have a life. However, when they leave early like that, it really does kick a show in the teeth. There are certain shows I simply do not attend because I do not feel like taking time off of work to attend them during the week, but know if I show up Saturday many will be packing up or gone. As a result, even more dealers leave early. Its a vicious circle. I sincerely believe, and this is not a jab at dealers at all, that all shows should give first priority and best table location to dealers willing to promise to be at the show until close. I am betting more people who cannot attend earlier will show up as a result and both collectors, show organizers, and those dealers, will benefit. I understand some dealers really only go to shows to do dealer to dealer business, and do not wish to attend the last day, but because of this the shows and collectors are suffering greatly.
I understand your points, medoraman, and agree that there should be a better way. There are some common issues for dealers at these shows and they include, but are not limited to travel arrangements, security and the vicious cycle that you commented on about lack of public later in shows. Some shows fine dealers ($1,000 or more) if they leave prior to an agreed upon time, other shows give discounts if a dealer stays past a certain point while some give preferential table placement to those committed to the entirety of the show.
