Septimus Severus 210 AD Rome SEVERVS PIVS AVG BRIT Laureate head right VICTORIAE BRIT Victory standing facing, head right, holding long palm and placing small round shield on palm 3.3g 20mm VF RIC IV 336; BMCRE 57; RSC 730 From http://www.ancient.eu.com/Septimius_Severus/, which is a rather shortened writeup on Septimius Severus. A related denarius of Caracalla: Caracalla AR Denarius 212 AD Rome ANTONINVS PIVS-AVG BRIT Laureate head right P M TR P XV COS III P P Hercules, nude, standing facing, head left, branch upward in right hand, club and lion skin in left 19mm x 21mm 3.15g RIC IV, Part I, 192
I agree with vlaha that this is cool stuff, but I can't disagree more about the second coin (Caracalla). Both are very nice coins and I would love to have either in my collection. The SS is specially nice. I saw one on the Bay recently but did not bid (I don't remember why, but the price was probably more than I wanted to spend).
That's just the pic - it looks like a scan, and they always look poor. The coin itself appears to be in great condition. Good stuff, WC. I have one Caracalla to share, of the following year, COS IIII, 213...
Caracalla AR Denarius OBV: ANTONINVS PIVS AVG BRIT, laureate head right REV: P M TR P XIIII COS III P P, Pax running left holding branch & scepter Struck at Rome, 211 AD 3.11 g, 18mm RIC 184, RSC 190, BMC 4
The second is a very poor scan (I really need to take good photographs of it...) In hand, it is a nice XF, from an old collection, with grey toning with a black-blue 'gasoline-like' stripe.
Hey, glad to see that you're still around and postin' coins ... => great coins, lil' dawg!! Ummm, I have a Caracalla, but it's not the same type ... but I do have a Septimius Severus denarius
@Steve I've been putting a lot of time into a video game (Minecraft), where I am currently building an Island Fortress and a walled mainland settlement to supply all of the mined goods, food and wood to said Fortress (it's all just a shell, with a population of 1 (my character), but it is a massive design). After I finish, I plan on recreating a Legionary Fort (like the one that was located in York), after this, but each of these projects take a long time.
=> ummm, or go ride your bike!! just jokes, dude => hey, if that's what you are totally into at the moment, then "do it well" ... I'm sure that your design is EPIC!! (you rock)
