what does everyone think about this off center quarter . I saw it on Ebay and it looks really interesting so I decided to see what you CT members thought about it. This looks similar to some of those extreme shield reverse cent errors that we saw a few weeks ago...I see a mix of a legitimate error and PMD in the link.

This is definitely one for Mike Diamond to explain. Certainly an error, but it does look like some PMD as well. Sometimes these things get stuck in the coin sorting machines.
I was thinking that it may have got stuck in a sorting machine when I first saw it. looks like whatever did this got the coin hot because of the color of it. this may have been heat buildup from the friction of the grinding action. I found a coin that came from the mint chewed and bent and considered it PMD because it happened after the strike.
Funny that you make that observation. I also seem to share the same observation. It seems like any major error coin affection the shape or size of a coin after the year 2002 has some damage to it. Im assuming that since the mint now ships coins to coin wrapping places like brinks these coins get caught, jammed, messed up etc in the machinery. Now coins like these i think if they are caught by coin sorting employees they have a deal with the mint to send them back so none get into circulation but apparently some people have connections where coins like these are able to get out and into ebay. Is this maybe a good theory?
Looks like an in the collar (non-broadstruck) off-center quarter that subsequently got caught in the machinery and damaged.
It's a genuine off-center strike that subsequently suffered horrendous post-strike damage. I have no means to specify the source of that damage.
here is a nice one that ended up selling for 477.00 on ebay was the final bid. struck on scrap metal. I think you can get stuff like this in the bags you buy from the mint or something.
the photos won't enlarge for me , I can see one photo enough to see that this was probably a Kansas quarter. was it struck on both sides. that was a cheap enough price for this one if both sides were die struck.
The mint no longer sells bags of coins i dont think. At least not like what they used to send out to banks back in the day. But there is a possibility for one to buy a modern mint bag which the minimum amount of coins inside are I think 1,500 or 15,000. Look up the bulk purchase program the mint offers for businesses and such.
