Where to sell rarer world coins?

How/where would you go about selling world coins? Ones that are actually worth a bit? For example, I have a silver shilling, queen victoria jubilee head, 1890, in better condition than any other example I can find pictures of. Price guides tell me this coin is actually a little valuable, but... WHERE? To whom? :p

I usually only collect or trade in US coins, and most places will only buy world coins by the pound, uninterested in individual values/rarities/etc.

    Thanks.

EBay. I know a lot of people don't like it but I don't know any other place to reliably get a good value for world coins. Local coin dealers just don't know enough about them and are not interested. If they are truly valuable you want the large number of potential buyers that eBay will expose it to.

There is a neat little place on this veryest forum called the BST - Buy Sell Trade where you can peddle your wares before surrendering them to the abysmal experiences of fleaBay or dealers that could care less. E'en a pecuniary Scot likes to spend his dosh there on 'casion.

:p Ok, then I will try my luck here first. Thanks for the advice. I was just kinda hoping there was a little corner of the web where the world coin aficionados hung out to do their dark deeds XD

Some of us are rather smitten with stuff from the world around - for me 'tis Scotland o' course. Occasionally I bag some booty from other places, like the USA(my darkside) or oft forgotten little countries in Asia etc.

Hmm - asia does have an allure. I'd definitely like to collect japanese coins - silver, gold, and ancient :p

Like, I'd give up collecting US coins completely, to collect Japanese XD

I really only like the pre-Meiji stuff myself. I'd really like to hunt down some shogunate era gold.

Absolutely :) I do have a little silver from more recent times - 100 yen coins and the like. But the shogunate and meiji gold pieces are gorgeous. I saw some at a swap meet I went to over there once, several years back.

Have you gotten yourself a copy of Hartill's new book yet?

If they are slabbed, great collections is a good place.

No, but I can never have enough references to make my bookcases creak and sag.

Hartill's book on Japanese is quite thin and cheap. It will not weigh heavily on either your bookshelves or wallet. Very good book on Japanese though. :)

I would recommend JNDA catalog as well. It's not too terribly expensive. I struggled to find Hartill's book - not a lot of sellers wanted to ship all the way down south.
