Heresy! But worth seeing!

Hi there, long time no see, my friends!
I confess that I did something heretic again! I slabbed a hammered penny from Edward I again! Well, to some American friends, this is not so unforgivable; but to some British friends, this is a total heresy!
I, actually, am one of those who won’t accept slabbed hammered coins. I do like feeling these old coins in my hands. NGC or PCGS capsules look like coffins to these charming little coins!
But! Due to a bet between one of my friends and me, I subscribed this very nice Edward I penny to NGC to see what grade it will receive. I believed it would be AU 55 or 58, while my friend, only XF 45.
So here comes MS 62! Yes, this Edward I penny is the best-looking one I have ever seen. But MS 62 still exceeds my expectation. I know a Cnut penny in MS is not so astonishing as Cnut pennies tend to have very good conditions. But a very common and widely circulated Edward I penny in MS should be something!
Anyway, NGC is not strong at identifying the British hammered coins. They mislabel this penny as S1383 (class 1d), while it should be S1385 (class 2a).
    Enjoy!

I am not an expert in grading English medieval, but I would grade it XF on the ancient scale. For my world coin scale I would grade it AU55. The slabber is using the US standards which ignore striking weakness, something which most world and ancient collectors do not do.

So, I would have agreed with you Assur versus your friend, but disagree with the TPG. That is nothing new, I disagree with them most of the time with ancient and medieval coins.

Spectacular coin either way though sir. :)
