Hi folks! So I am working on a date set for 1835, and I've got the Large Cent, Half Dime (currently at PCGS) and Half Dollar, so I'm halfway there. I'm fairly confident I can get a Bust Dime from 1835 at my LCS, leaving the Half Cent and Capped Bust Quarter on my ebay radar screen. I saw a few Half Cents from 1835 go up for auction over the past few days, but they were already fully bid up or out of my BIN price range. But I had followed one in particular today, ready to pounce! I saw the price gradually go up (still in my price range) but did not throw my bid in quite yet...I set my ebay sniper from "stun" to "kill", and got a direct hit at the last second. So here she is. I paid $43 shipped. Good deal? What do you think the grade is? These are the seller's pics, but I'll make sure to get my own photos up upon arival. Thanks, Simon
What makes you think cleaned? I'm not seeing any of the fine scratches that would accompany a cleaning...
The seller also has a 14 day return policy, so if I don't like the coin for whatever reason, I can always send it back.
I still think its a decent deal but that's because i'm found of type coins, i have never had trouble selling or trading half cents and a lot of them have been cleaned in the 160+ years they been around.
I agree, I was just making a point, and the point is photos are misleading, I can look at the inner field staining, tone difference, medallion shiner then field, and so on ! Since I said the coin looked cleaned, which I still think, only because I'm making my call on a photo, it brings lots of " COINTALK " lol !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Photos can definitely be misleading, and you may be right about it being cleaned, Rick. The only way we will know for certain is once I have it in-hand. It's still quite a nice coin and if it has been cleaned, I would suspect it was an older cleaning, and the coin has partially retoned since.
Just my opinion but I think that the coin has been cleaned. A coin with that amount of wear shouldn't look like that. For $43 you didn't do bad but personally I would have held out for a higher grade coin that doesn't have glaring problems even if it was $20 more expensive.
I'm not sure about the cleaning... it's tough to say based on the seller pics. And as for your half dime, we'll see how it grades - I need one for my type set, too. It may stay in Ohio (kidding...). Either way, I think for $43 you're well bought here.
So based on the new pictures, do you guys think it was an old cleaning that retoned? Color looks pretty good to me. The original photos definitely didn't capture the color right.
Looks like it worked out for you. From these new pics I don't see any evidence of harsh cleaning. Thumbs up!
