I think there are some nice 99's coming up in September on heritage. I didn't check the 04's last time I was on the website. I need a couple upgrades for my album - that and a 93 liberty cap.

I watch them all the time or not at all depending on my finances this is a good time for me my purchases from their last auction should be here the beginning of the week I can't wait is a couple things I'm excited about only missed one I really liked cause I was on the road and pulled off and had no Internet connection anywhere I'm not real focused on what I collect tho silver dollars and early copper being my favs but I'm often distracted by something early with great color and eye appeal

I'm still hoping for a 93 liberty cap and a chain every chain I've seen lately had issues that turned me off I don't mind minor enviro damage or things like that but all I've seen lately look like they've been shot with buckshot sandblasted attacked with a hatchet or drilled etc

    Thanks for sharing
Thanks for sharing these. It is not often that you see a coin which improves upon the similar example in the Holmes collection and both of these would be improvements for the examples for these die states.

ps For those not familiar with the S-164, the 'scratch' is part of the die failure and NOT PMD. The planchet on the S-51 is far superior to the Holmes example of this die state.

It seems like there should be enough there to verify the reverse, but I'm not having any luck. I'm either seeing something that isn't there that's throwing me off or there is no match. The former is probable.

Beautiful S-51, Dave. And that S-164 is exceptional as well.

Ok here's my newest and favorite by far!! image.jpg she's a details grade (xf) but what details!! Is more pitted in photos than in person is beautiful in hand I've been waiting for a really nice higher grade 94 liberty cap at a price I coild afford when this came up I was all over it and got it for far less than I was willing to pay when I got it today was pleasantly surprised is far better looking than pictures show a r-4 s 61 too!!

With fresh eyes this morning, I think I know what I saw that wasn't there. The ribbon loop appears to be more rounded than it probably really is. A close look at the leaves and their positions relative to the straight stems and strings of berries indicate Sheldon's Reverse G. The inner leaf under the left ribbon loop rather than beside it eliminates most reverses and a relatively straight right ribbon end eliminates others.

This has me re-evaluating the Large letters I thought I saw on LIBERTY for my earlier ID of S-5. Reverse G only appears on S-8 which has smaller letters. Unfortunately, the stem(s) under the bottom of the leaves, which are distinctly different, are missing.

Yep. I have to go with the more likely S-8 this morning. I think I saw large Letters because I'm use to seeing Large Letters (A numismatic Rorschach Test). The leaf tips are closer to the bust as on Obverse 9 consistent with S-8.

I'd agree with Marshall on the wreath cent diagnosis. An S-8, The position of the lowest left outer leaf is a diagnostic of the S-8. It is close and the POINTS down toward the left Upright of U in UNITED. The reverse die is unique. You only need to see this to identify the variety.

Oh, and another '98 to keep the cool thread going. Some nice posted coins here!

1798 s-167. Terminal Die State- three reverse CUDs/rim breaks. A common variety. The dies failed early, so the variety mostly encountered in the later die state. I'm a sucker for cracks and CUDs.

Another s-164, an earlier die state than previously posted. Breen II, with the "scaling" or die rust not so evident9 as my posted later die state) and the die sinking at the date much less evident - love those die states!

Might I ask what a coin like the above would go for nowadays? (The 1798 in a similar condition...excluding rarer varieties)

These are absolutely stunning examples. Are they in the Condition Census already or are they examples that would definitely change it?

    Thank you Marshall!

All the coins posted are already in the Condition Census. And with very nice provenance, a most interesting aspect of collecting to me! The two s-164s are in the recorded top 6, The S-167 tied for cc#12, but IMO a much more attractive coin than several higher. The s-51 is a new find and a top 12 coin. For anyone interested in how these grade by EAC standards, EAC grades are all in the XF45 range for the'98s. A comparable slab grade would be AU53-AU58. The s-51 is an EAC 25 net 20 coin. Mine and Noyes' opinions that is - we all have our own preferences to grading and condition that vary somewhat or alot :)
