I know that there are issues with BRIT in the legend on coins of Septimus Severus, Geta and Caracalla (as shown below). I am wondering if any of the other Severan family members issued coins with BRIT on their legend or with a British theme. I currently have the one below: Caracalla AR Denarius 212 AD Rome ANTONINVS PIVS-AVG BRIT Laureate head right P M TR P XV COS III P P Hercules, nude, standing facing, head left, branch upward in right hand, club and lion skin in left 19mm x 21mm 3.15g RIC IV, Part I, 192
Just a guess. Septimus Severus died in York, Britania. Maybe thats why. Some of his coins had BRIT on them also.
The reason why is that they were the 'conquerors' of Britain, with Septimus Severus having Victoriae Brit coinage issues.
very interesting coin WC, neat legend, and just a nice coin all the way around (literally and figuratively).
Britain was a major theater of war from Caesar to Septimius but keeping those rowdy Brits under control was a lot of work. After Septimius died, just who would you expect to keep fighting in Britain? Caracalla soon changed to his GERM series coins. Elagabalus was an Easterner an seemed more interested in other forms of conquest (Vestals???). It should take little imagination to figure out why that end of the Empire was available for guys like Postumus and Carausius.
The BRIT both sides coins are always popular too. Here is a Geta example but you can find lots of VICTORIAE BRIT types for Sept. Sev. and Caracalla too. Martin
Commodus also had issues with the legend "BRIT". I own two very poor condition coins with this legend. Here is the better of the two: Commodus AR Denarius OBV: M COMM ANT P FEL AVG BRIT PP, laureate head right REV: CONC COM P M TR P XVI COS VI, Concordia standing left, holding patera & scepter Struck at Rome, 191 AD 2.5g, 17mm RIC 219
