I often see very large collections like this for sale. http://www.ebay.com/itm/HUGE-coin-c...10?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item3a82dbcb6e Thing is, why don't the guy just sell it piece by piece, or small lots? Not very many people can just plunk down 29k like that.
I tried to get him to sell pieces of it to me through YouTube and he said he only want to sell it as a lot. No one has that much spare change lol.
Man that's weird. Even if you split it six ways, that's still almost 5k, which is still a lot of money for some people.
I've seen large lots like this before, but it's usually dealers trying to unload junk. I noticed in the description he said "3 1909 vdbs"
A friend of mine and I went to a persons house and we bought some silver dollars lots of silver coins and wheat cents. Also some barber coins and a few odds and ends. We told her to spend lots of the silver certificates because they were in awful shape. granted there was 2 stars, Not going to waste my time to make 20 cents. So now we sell the silver and wheats at our local club or send them to a person who we sell silver to. You want to get rid of your stuff as soon as possible.
You would think he'd be able to ask for a bit more if he broke it into smaller sections too. People want instant gratification though and I guess that's why he wants it all gone in one big show. I just couldn't do it, that's a car and ours is getting close to retirement time...
I simply do not see anywhere near the value there. Stuff like this I wouldn't pay a whole lot more than melt and junk value for non-silver items. Looks like he is trying to hook a sucker.
I agree with you and that is why he won't part it out - then everybody could look at the individual pieces and see what it is really worth.
The main reason he's not willing to part it out probably has a lot to do with his "$5000 coin" which "is worth $5000 in MS-60 condition." You know... the VF details coin with HARSH scratches everywhere?
Btw Tim, not trying to be unfair but to use this as a learning opportunity. An experienced collector would quickly look over this lot and realize why. This is where knowledge and experience comes in. Please remember this when you believe you are a coin expert. I have been collecting coins about 40 years now, and believe I might have something relatively intelligent to say about maybe 1% of the coin market. Even I, who has not collected US coins in a couple decades, quickly saw what this lot was. Having said that, I applaud you asking here why, and not simply assume he is underpricing his coins. We have a lot of patience with young men who wish to learn and ask questions. I encourage you to continue asking questions, and learning from some extremely knowledgable people who reside here at Cointalk.
I NEED IT! (but i cant afford it) if he were peicing it out though i'd buy some of that paper currency. i cant find 1928/34/50 $10 bills anywhere! i just have a whole bunch of 5's, 20's and 50's
We have been trying for years now to get Tim on the straight and narrow - then he goes and blows all the lessons with some foolish eBay purchase where he buys some oversexed, overpriced and overgraded coin and thinks he got a steal.
