Hi everyone, for those who don't know, I'm building a monster hobby bench/desk. I don't own any slabbed coins atm but would like to know what are the dimensions of them. Thx. Clutchy
Thank you Lehigh. Here is one of three frame sections. Total it will be 19' long x 41" high x 24" deep with a 30" top on it. 20" drawer slides. Not sure how many drawers and shelves yet but there will be lots of them. All birch plywood inner structure. The steel with be a oxidized copper patina with either deep gloss white doors and drawers or weathered copper.
This is actually the desk section. Was planning on having it this way but I changed my mind on the drawer widths, so this side will be the backside now, since those supports are welded in place.
i am so intrigued. is this something that you are going to be "building" things on, like model airplanes? i mean, you WELDED the frame together, that is hardcore. what exactly do you plan on using this for? and how would dimensions of slabs fit into that? i am dying to see the finished product considering the description so far. more pics please and a schematic of what you are thinking please
I also build and race gas powered (nitro) remote control cars. I have mini milling machines and a lathe, so it needs to be sturdy. I would just be machining high performance plastics and aluminum, so no coolant is required, so no concerns about the coins. They would be in sealed containers anyway. I have a small apartment so most of it would be for storage (until my coin collection gets out of hand lol) The front and rear frame sections are welded but it all bolts together, those sections alone weigh 42 lbs each, so it would be a issue if I wanted to move from here if I couldn't take it apart.
About the slabs....since its being made, I might as well build a slab drawer, and a 4" tall drawer is pretty common so its good.
first...awesome. so i just want to wrap my head around this and make sure i have this right. it is mainly a tooling work surface. i love it. but i fail to see where coins came into this; or their slabs' dimensions. are you planning on building some type of secure, hidden storage area in it with corresponding slots for slabbed coins due to the fact the base of this construction is so beefy and strong? i mean this ranks up there with a lazy-boy with a built in beer fridge and a toilet. please continue to send pics. and i am being completely honest. awesome.
I hope to have all three frame structures side by side, by Saturday afternoon. Ill bump this thread as soon as I get some more shot. To explain it in a few words.....its complete overkill.
Go hard or go home, right? Seriously it's pretty awesome that you have this skill and are able to build exactly what you want. I am way too envious of folks like you. Kudos.
I'll go out on a limb and suggest you don't need to bother testing. Looks like nice work and a tight ship over there.
