Hi y'all! I've never posted here before, but I've been going through tons of old coins from my grandfather and just came across this very odd quarter.
It looks like the front is missing most of it's top layer of silver? Thoughts?

Hi, and welcome to Coin Talk. The quarter you have is a silver one, and not plated. What you are seeing on the obverse is something that either spilled on the coin or was deliberately used to coat the coin. The value is around melt value which is currently shy of $4.

Thank you for your expertise! The picture makes it hard to see, but the lighter color is recessed and dull while the darker areas match the silver on the back. Maybe a corrosive could've eaten away some of the silver and left the rim intact? I just wanted to make sure before I drop it off with the others to sell. :)
