Hi folks, Took a gamble on ebay today, and snagged an 1829 Large Cent for $18 based on bad photos. It looks like it has some decent detail, I'll photograph it when it arrives! Simon
Can anyone tell if this is the medium letters or large letters variety? I can't tell from the pics...
how did anyone determine what date the coin actually is ? maybe this is the reason for the bad photos. I deal with a lot of different things on ebay and the darn coin section appears to have more corruption than any other Ebay section. folks will sell anything and swear it is real and the only one on earth when it comes to coins.
I guess that's part of the "gamble" part. If it turns out to be a different date, I'll just notify ebay.
Well...contacted the seller and turns out it's an 1839, not an 1829. Getting a full refund, so it's all good. The obverse design was suspect, and I decided to follow it up before it shipped out.
It's worth taking the risk on a coin that has a bad photo. Just pay with PayPal and open a case if the seller won't take it back. Great opportunity.
It's not that easy when you live across the pond and pay $25+ for shipping, not to mention dealing with customs all the time...
you did the right thing . sometimes it is better to talk things over with a seller like you did. this helped the seller and you in the long run.
Yep, the seller was understanding. I asked for better pictures and he sent them to me. Still waiting on the refund, but I'll give him a day or so.
