If the same coin can sell for the same money what difference does the grade make.
The big question then is how much does it cost to get it into a holder.

To answer the question regarding the coins posted:

ASE: No point to grading this unless key date (1995-W), and even then, no real point.
Morgan: Lots of contact marks, weak strike and odd luster equate to probably dipped. At best would grade AU55-MS62. Might get "AU details" slabbed, however, due to the odd luster. Don't bother grading.

  9. The gradeing of coins by human eyes is a joke.
Give them the same coin everyday for a week and ill bet it will get a different grade every time.
Will your eyes not see something different each time you view a coin even if you have seen them many times.
Also human will allow this with this coin but reject it on another.
As for me my grade of a coin will do as well as any company that is paid for same service.
Only difference is they have a name and are trusted to do a job and because we all need someone that can slab a coin and pretty much add a price tag to it.
No two pair of eyes will view the same coin alike.
You can see this when a member here ask you to grade a coin and watch how many different ways the same coin is seen by many eyes.
Its a waste of money thats made the gradeing companys rich off the backs of coin collectors.

What really concerns me about ANACS is that HSN can have thousands of coins graded perfect the day after a coin is released from the mint. HSN had them in ANACS slab and ShopNBC had them in PCGS slabs. I have PCGS slabs, But I'am thinking that NGC might have a better reputation. In the past PCGS seemed less likely to have a larger population of higher graded coin which made me feel better about buying there graded coins. But if they are in bed with ShopNBC; maybe NGC is the way to go. I would not buy any coins from ICG or ANACS because of there relationship with HSN.

The reason that different people grade coins differently is because each person weights the elements of grading differently. Some people grade almost entirely on surface condition while others put a greater emphasis on strike or luster. Subjectivity is inherent in grading. The grading companies force their employees to grade to a company standard rather than their own. This helps ensure consistency. As for your claim that they will grade a coin differently everyday of the week, that is pure fantasy. My experience is that they will usually return a coin in a 2 grade range. Most of the exceptions are coins that are deemed problem coins during one grading and problem free in another grading.

As for the TPG's getting rich off the back of collectors, that is also a fantasy. I would be willing to bet that most coins submitted to TPG's are submitted by dealers, not collectors.

As for the OP's question. I agree mainly with Doug, it depends on the coin. PCGS is tougher on most series, and I think they are much more conservative with the premium gem grades than NGC. NGC is tougher across the board on the strike designations and while I only have anecdotal evidence to support my theory, I think that NGC is tougher on dipped coins.

They're offering them before they have the actual graded coins in their possession, so it's nothing more than a presale.

Have you considered that maybe, just maybe, this could in part be because some people here cannot grade and are simply shooting from the hip or repeating the answers given by others? This is a very general online coin forum with a membership that ranges from very young newbies to those with considerable experience, so would you expect anything less?

One problem, NGC has worked out deals with them just like the others.

While there are several reasons for anybody to prefer one TPG over another, this is not one of them.
