it is a man made fake error coin EDIT; maybe I spoke too quick on this one but it sure don't look right in the photo. I based my opinion on the extra 5 being raised on the coin the same as the date is. it is possible for the extra five to be sunken in or level with the surface , in this case I would change my mind. is the extra 5 raised or sunken in ?
Man made fake. Although not too bad a job of moving metal to make the extra 5, It is amateurish. Notice the discoloration/removal of patina around that last part of the date. This is where the extra medal can be scraped along to produce the last '5'. It would help to see it in more detail, but that is what I think at the moment. Jim
I posed no opinion, Rascal. You declared it a 'man made error'. The onus is on you. My gut feeling is that you cannot back up your declaration. Prove me wrong.
true mint errors and varietys are made by a real U.S. mint die striking them. man made error coins are coins that are altered at the hands of a corrupt individual trying to rob some poor unknowing soul of their hard earned cash.
I think it's just some coincidental damage...not necessarily someone attempting to make an error coin in order to fool folks. But the bottom line is that it is NOT a mint-made error, it is damage.
Thanks for the help everyone. I'm new to the site and to collecting and I must say I'm already loving it. I'm not near the coin right now but I will look tomorrow and try to get a more detail picture up for everyone. Here is a zoomed in shot of it I already had. To me it looks raised a little bit on the bottom of the extra 5. Will check ASAP. Thanks agin.
Being a Zincoln I don't think you could do that without exposing the zinc, could you? I think it's corrosion that sort of resembles a 5. It's not the same shape as the 5 in the date.
after seeing the last photo I agree with you. this is probably just plating bubbles where the zinc is starting to rot. at first this did resemble another 5 , photos can make things appear to be different. non cents you are learning fast and I'm glad to see young folks learn about coins.
I'm not. Why did you say 'man made error'? Or, do you not know? Remember, I didn't offer an opinion on the coin, you did. Explain the reasoning behind your opinion. Apparently, you're not the expert you'd like us to believe you are.
I have never had a coin graded and was wondering if I had this graded would they tell me exactly what this is. The extra 5 is raised I checked today. I don't see how it would be corrosion that looks that much like a 5. If its not a mint error then I think it might be a man made error. Then after a while the corrosion has lifted the copper to look as it was raised. If that makes sense.
looks like someone melted copper wire an let it drip, the bright area is where they cleaned it so the melted copper would adhere....
