I won this, once it arrives, I will shoot for some better pictures. I truly think maundy coins are sleepers, due to their very low mintage. This coin only has a mintage of 4,158. The 1909-S VDB cent can't even hold a candle to this. Also, what do you think it's worth. I paid $50, but is it worth more or less?
The reverse image on the circulated one is the seated statue. On the proof-like issue, it's the 4 in the wreath. As for the price, $50 seems WAY overpriced, but I don't think it'd be right for you to return it for that reason. I would have personally offered $20-$23 on that coin given the condition. Also, Tim, given all coins in the series are the same guide price, why didn't you hold out for a nice looking 1841 (half the mintage of the majority of the series)?
Oddly enough, krause states $90 for this coin. I'm happy at $50, it has a nice old patina to it, and doesn't seem to have any damage. The older you go with maundy, the harder it can be to find. Imagine how much was lost was "The Blitz" occurred in 1940? More than one million homes got damaged. Besides being lost, sometimes maundy was used for jewelry. So between bombings and clueless people who damaged them, I bet there is less than 2,000 1843 Maundy groats out of the original 4,158. The groats that circulated for that year had britannia seated.
UGH! Of course you were right! I completely spaced. Here I was trying to demonstrate that Maundy issues often shared the same types as circulation issues, but that is with the threepence.
For that reason, I'm a little scared to buy some maundy. There is no difference between size, weight, and metal content for some issues of maundy, and they look exactly the same.
That's for a UNC (as opposed to FDC) coin, isn't it? By European standards, your coin is VF/XF, nowhere near UNC.
Tim, it's the same as when you find proof Kennedy coins in bank rolls. People spend them if they don't know what they are. My friend is a great example of this. His mom asked me to sell her father's coins for her because my friend told her that if he is given the coins (they are his inheritance), he'll take them to the bank and deposit them into his savings account.
Looks cleaned, but at least it's not as circulated as it first seemed... but now it looks like there's also some PVC damage or something. XF details - cleaned?
Umm, no. PVC residue is green. I'm talking about the brown/black spotting on the reverse in the teeth. The big spot might just be oxidation, but the rest, I'm pretty sure is PVC damage.
