    Hey guys,

I've only been coin collecting for about a year now. For the first time I'm looking into having some of my coins slabbed and I have a few questions.

What coins grading service is considered the best?
How much does it cost to have coins slabbed? I've read some info on PCGS site about how a membership is required, but it seems too expensive especially since I'm only slabbing a few coins.

I bought this lot of two morgan dollars off ebay for $50. Would it be worth the money to slab these coins?

    Thanks!

heh I hope they are real. They look real (to my rookie eyes at least). If there is any indication that they are fake, please let me know and I'll open a case with ebay.

in general, my opinion would be, don't waste your money on slabbing coins. except for very high grade (ms65 or better) and a few other coins that are exceptions, most coins are not worth the cost of having them certified.

If you want something slabbed then buy it slabbed.........

Too expensive otherwise. Especially for the two coins you list.

I can't see slabbing clad coins. They are minted in such high numbers, the metal content is practically worthless and they're still too new to have any real numismatic value. Maybe in 50 years.

For me to invest in slabbing, the coin would have to have gold or silver content, be uncirculated, and something I would want maximum protection for. My small collection of silver proof Kennedy halves, or my one ASE proof, for instance.

You typically take your coins to a good dealer and they can tell you approximately what they are worth. The dealer can send them out to be slabbed for you if you deem it worthwhile. The cost depends on your dealer and maybe on the coin, but I think around $25 per coin. I'm guessing it would be more if it is a really high quality coin where they need to do more work to grade it properly. If you have a really high end coin that is worth thousands you may want to certify it with PCGS and then send it to CAC for verification. I agree that your coins aren't worth sending in to be slabbed as it wouldn't likely add much value.

PS ... A dealer should be able to tell you if your coins are real.

LOL. You learn something new everyday.

I was speaking in general. I find it amazing how many slabbed clad coins, some dated this year, I find online. Slabbed, clad coins, say that 3 times fast. :)

Slabbing should be for your best coins. I have a 1915 Quarter Eagle that has been passed down through my mother's side of the family. It was cleaned once and there are lots of micro-scratches in the field, otherwise it is in excellent shape. I'm confident it will grade MS. Right now I have it in an Air-Tite capsule, but being a family heirloom, it will be one of the first coins I will have slabbed through PCGS.
