It's really hard to find them on eBay in higher grades... except you don't mind spending 300+ dollars for a slabbed half dollar coin.
I really think that historically, they are a collectible design, but compared to what all Barber series were replaced with, they were lacking beauty, and complexity. It also seems rather arrogant of Charles Barber to put his rather simple and unappealing design on the dime, quarter, and half, as well as a spin off of it facing the other way on the nickel. That being said, I still found the urge to build a collection of Barber half dollars, and am currently working on it.
Barbers in xf45 and higher me likely. They don't wear well. I like smurf hat too, especially on the little dime. Quarters my favorite barber, I think much better than the very cramped standing liberty composition. And mercuries just make me yawn. I know I'm supposed to be blown away by mercs but I ain't! Neo-classicism in Barbers... the end of an era.
I think that most critics of the Barber design have never seen a gem grade Barber Quarter or Half Dollar in hand. Buy hey, I even like them in the circulated grades.
Ahh I love when the boo birds come out with pitchforks and torches. No surprise here, I like them in all grades. Haters gonna hate!
Hey, I am not the only one collecting circulated Barbers... sometimes it really does hurt when people keep posting their perfectly toned MS coins
