Do you like Barber coins? I didn't used to, but they're starting to grow on me, realizing there were none in circulation when I started collecting in the 1960s.

My personal opinion is that Barber coins had an unappealing design (cue boos and tomatoes being thrown).

They're ugly and dull when heavily worn, which is the only way I saw them as a YN. In higher grades, they've sort of grown on me -- they used to be one of my least favorite coins, but I've found myself focusing on the halves in spite of myself. :)

I felt the same way about nickel three-cent pieces, of which my parents handed six down to me, but one of those nickel three-cent pieces is an EF40 (my coin collection consists mostly of G4's, VG8's, and F12's), and those nickel three-centers have some value.

I didn't realize, when I was younger, that the face on the coin was of a lady. I thought it was a man.

I like the barber coins a lot, however I think Liberty looks way too manly on them. I like how shes look Roman but she definitely looks like a dude.....

I used to think she WAS a dude until I read that she wasn't.

I guess it depends on which Barber you are referring to, but the Barbers did produce some beautiful coins. Here are my favorite two design by William Barber.

The real shame though is that his most beautiful designs were never produced. His patterns are perhaps the most famous ever created, including the legendary Half Union and the Amazonian series.

I was thinking of Charles Barber. I like trade dollars.

I used to dislike them until Mr. Hayes posted his phanominal set. Now I've been putting a set together

I'm not as big of a fan of Charles as I am William, but here are a few that I couldn't do without. The first is the obverse of my avatar.

I am not a fan of the barber design. It's way to generic and dull, too much like every other Greek/roman art peice of which there are a lot. Out of my type set which ranges from xf-ms, my barber example (half dollar) is the only one below xf 40. It grades a f-12. So yeah, no fan here.

I like the reverse and they have grown on me but in the end they are widely considered ugly for a reason. I don't like the Smurf hat she is wearing.

Yes, that hat does nothing for the lady, and there is nothing wrong with the reverse.

Barber designed this one for the Kingdom of Hawaii.

Barber also designed these gastly Cubian coins.
