Bought a fake one

I didn't have the scales and purchaseda counterfeit 1894 Morgan. Passed the Tone test, wasn't magnetic
And passed the 12/6 obverse test. Went to a local dealer with good scales and there it is 25.7 grams! Ugh

Why do people keep doing this? DO NOT buy a key date Morgan that isn't slabbed, unless you have tons of experience with Morgans--this isn't aimed at you, but all of the inexperienced Morgan collectors. Those coins are so easily counterfeited. Only buy a good date like that from a reputable dealer. ALL Morgans from 1892 to 1896 are prime targets. Same goes for "S" mint coins from 1884 on, and most CC dates.

 

All my key date Morgans are slabbed, I trusted myself to much and got caught up in the moment.

 

I think it goes to show others how unreliable both the ring test and magnetic tests are. Yes, failing them can prove they are counterfeits. However, passing them does NOT prove they are real unfortunately.

I expect to get my money back, bought from a reputable high end store. I made this post as a warning to others always buy slab and check the numbers on the slab. Anyone can be burned with fakes if you don't follow all the rules

 

While (presently) safer, "slabbed" with "matching numbers" is not foolproof.

 

Why doesn't a 'reputable high end store' have a scale???

 

25.7 vs 26.73, what is the tolerance on those?

 

I hate to hear this. Morgan dollars today Raw and Slabs are a hot bed for fakes
Chinese and homeland its done. I hope ya can get money back!

 

I'd like to see a good photo of this "fake". What about the OD and thickness? There's some excellent 90% silver counterfeits out there, and all parameters meet spec within normal tolerance range.

 

Even being the correct weight is no proof that it's real . It's just another way to tell it's not . The best recourse is what the op did and that's buy from only well known dealers that will take a coin back , no questions asked . Of course it's best to be able to tell a real coin from a fake the sad fact is that some , and we're lucky this is still in the minority , but some of the better fakes will fool even the pros without the proper equipment to do the proper testing .
Like Jello said until we put some pressure on our government to stop letting China dump all their fakes on us , they will keep getting better at their craft . Heck if one man from Canada can stop all this Chinese junk from entering Canada we should be able to do it .

Ya their coming in north south east west.. Something has to be done. Feds I am not even go their.
Its seam like the only Fed things being done is reading this. I guess I will just ask thru here.

1894 is definitely a good date, and I would only have bought that slabbed, from a very reputable dealer, with whom I had an established relationship. Some of the Chinese counterfeits are excellent, unfortunately. I hope you get your money back, and please buy coins from reputable people, with return policies.

 

Exactly. We have seen many really good looking counterfeit PCGS slabs out there, with counterfeit coins. Buying in plastic is an 80% assurance, and the extra 20% comes from buying reputably.

 

Excellent point however this coin was purchased from a gun show and neither of us had scales at the time, I told him I was going to slab the coin to make sure it wasn't fake. Glad I saved time and weighed before I shipped off.

i am not familiar with the reference to the canadian man? was that said in jest or is there something to what you are saying. i am interested because i purchase a lot of canadian silver and i just wanted to read about this gentleman if you could share what you meant.

 

I am thankful I stopped collecting Morgans when they went about $7-8 apiece - I never really cared for the design but liked that they were over 100 years old. Have some nice dates and mintmarks, but not much risk of my coins being fake since I have had them a long time.

 

The man is real , his name is Mike . He won an award from PCGS for doing what he did about a year or two ago . He goes by the name Fake Canada on some forums . I'm not sure if he's on CT but I think he is .
