I could guarantee ya both weren't plated. The P-Mint is an El Yunque I got at the Philly mint at a machine where you can exchange an old quarter for a one that the mint is currently minting, and at the time of my visit, it was El Yunque. The D-Mint is from Littleton (yes my parents bought them for me) and they aren't plated, as the Edge shows the bright copper.

Can be that the machine was giving out mint-set quality, satin coins?

The mint stopped making satin's a couple of years ago.

then was the coin struck from a fresh die? Still, both the satin and brilliant have superb lusters of their kind--satiny luster and brilliant luster.

The surface finish on a business strike coin can vary considerably depending on how much polishing the die received after hardening, and how much wear the die has received through use. A new die can have a matte or a PL finish depending on the amount of polish/cleaning it received. Then through use as the die starts to wear and flowlines start to develop you can get a tight flashy luster, then as it wears more the luster band becomes more subdued and starts widening. Eventually you get a satiny finish/luster, and fianlly a worn heavily flowlined appearance.
