Getting tired of lugging around the big world coin books. Is there decent book on GB coins with somewhat accurate values?
Ok, with that put aside, which book has a great reference? Would prefer decimal and pre-decimal coverage, but pre-decimal only is fine.
GB has their own versions of the US Redbook. There are a couple actually. They are published annually. Coincraft is one I own I believe.
You will usually find books on GB coins going back to around the time of the Norman invasion. Anything earlier than that and it becomes more of a specialty medieval reference. So basically around 1000 years worth of coins. Its handy to have, but just like the redbook, please never mistake it for a really detailed reference. Its a high level kind of a book, just like the redbook. Btw, I am pretty sure Spinks puts one out as well. I am sure GB collectors will know more.
That is what I use. http://www.amazon.com/Coins-England-United-Kingdom-Catalogue/dp/1907427198/ref=pd_sim_sbs_b_2 This is the recommended and standard overall resource book for the British series (as I learned while in the UK) It is like the Redbook, and is an overview of the coins of the UK.
A point for those like me: If the values are not accurate (I agree that no '...and their values' book can be accurate) and if we don't care about new issues, we can save a bit by buying an old edition. Mine is a 1999 and was $2. It lists what exists and gives relative values so I might see that a certain coin is a high roller and another is not which is all I want from a book on UK coins. My newest UK coin is a Cartwheel 2d and I doubt that will change so the 1999 will work for me. Don't pay the price of a 2013 new book for a leftover or used book.
Yep. I do not collect ultra modern coins, so even my KM phonebooks are ten years old and I do not care. Whenever there is a new edition of a book every year, always save your pennies and buy an older copy. Use the money to buy coins instead.
COIN YEARBOOK published by token publishing is a small and superb book--coins with prices in pounds from celtic Britain ,roman right through to 2012. can be found on ebay at a moderate price.annual publication I always buy one.
