Numismatics is the study of money, banknotes, medallions, stock certificates and token coins. It is a very interesting topic as it illustrates the different culture, era, economy, and or even politics. People those who collect the different kinds of currency are known as Numismatists. Numismatists are interested in the origin of money, its uses, and its variety, production and finally appearance. It is really important to have an expert help you when it comes to your coin collecting, if you don't have any experience in coin collecting.
I'm far from being a numismatist. To me, coin collecting is just a hobby, and I collect only for the fun of it.
This I would agree with. This is also correct. This is common usage, but in my opinion incorrect. People who collect the different kinds of currency/ coins etc are more properly termed as collectors. There is frequently overlap between the two groups but there need not be. I know a great many collectors whose only numismatic knowledge about when they collect is what date and mintmarks there are, and maybe the current values for the ones they don't have. I've known many numismatists who don't collect at all or who study widely in many fields and series that they do not collect. A collector may be a numismatist but many aren't, a numismatist may be a collector but does not have to be.
