I have hit a plateau on coin collecting in that most of the coins I would like to purchase are way out of my price range. To mix things up, I wanted to start collecting currency. I wanted to start collecting $1 bills by district, but have a few questions for anyone willing to take the time to answer.

I went through the dollar bills in the petty cash drawer at work and pulled the two following notes which were the nicest of the bunch.

    2009 D07712020B
    2009 G49189511D

    My questions are:

    1. Is 2009 the most recent series of $1 bills?
    2. Is the first letter of the serial number the district? (D is Cleveland, G Chicago?)
    3. To have a complete collection by district would be a total of 12 bills for the date? A-L?
    4. For Series like 2003, would you assemble too sets, one for 2003 and another for 2003A?

Any help you guys can offer would be great!

Welcome to paper money, and thanks for the refreshing post. It's a nice change to have someone collecting something other than exotic serial number patterns.

...not that there's anything wrong with it.

SN's do nothing for me, only older notes, stars and of course obligatory attractive ladies.
